Meyrin is a municipality in the canton of Geneva, Switzerland. CERN, a European particle physics laboratory, has its main site here. At the same time, the CERN Science Gateway, the Jardin botanique alpin de Meyrin, Lac des Vernes and the live arts programme offer different perspectives on the area. For your trip, you can therefore start by deciding whether science, nature observation or art will be the main focus.
Science at CERN
The CERN Science Gateway is CERN’s education and outreach centre and offers immersive multimedia exhibitions. It provides a practical introduction for travellers interested in science. The laboratory’s main site is also in Meyrin, but it is not the same as the Gateway: the Science Gateway refers to the education centre with its exhibitions, while the main site refers to the location of the particle physics laboratory.
Botanical Garden and Lac des Vernes
The Jardin botanique alpin de Meyrin is a living museum focused on alpine flora and fauna. A labelled collection includes 2,450 plants from temperate regions around the world; the number may change as the collection develops. This brings together a clear alpine focus and a wide-ranging plant collection. For travellers interested in botany, this combination is the garden’s defining theme.
Paths run along the shore of Lac des Vernes, and there are also recreation areas. Unlike the botanical garden, the focus here is on the lake and observing it: an educational trail is designed for curious visitors. The project includes an amphitheatre shelter and three study ponds, intended for close observation of life in the lake and its flora and fauna. These features draw attention to the lake and its surroundings; swimming is not permitted in Lac des Vernes.
Urban Development and Art
Meyrin’s urban development is also part of its character. Since the 1950s, it has developed from a small farming village into a commuter town with numerous high-rise buildings; many residents work at CERN or in central Geneva. The artwork “Ici ailleurs” forms a footpath from Meyrin’s former village centre to its new town centre. This gives the area’s development a tangible point of reference in the form of an artwork and a footpath, alongside its urban structures.
Events and Wildlife
Meyrin’s live arts programme presents performances and concerts at the Théâtre du Forum and at various venues across the municipality. As venues may change as part of the programme, check the dates and specific venue for your trip. In addition, the cultural services department commissions artists to develop performances and experiences connected with social issues, emblematic places in the city or administrative projects. Individual works may change.
The Vivarium de Meyrin offers another perspective on wildlife: visitors can observe snakes, lizards and crocodiles from around the world in their natural environment. This highlights the distinct nature themes in Meyrin: the garden focuses on alpine nature, Lac des Vernes on life in the lake, and the Vivarium on reptiles from around the world.
