Villarepos is situated on a hill west of the Chandon in the molasse hill country of the northern Fribourg Central Plateau. The village is about 6 km as the crow flies southwest of Murten and about 2.5 km east of Avenches. These straight-line distances help put the village in geographical context, but they are not road distances. For a stay, two themes offer clear orientation: protected buildings in Villarepos and Chandossel, and hikes that connect the village with the surrounding place names and landscapes.

Landscape between the Chandon and the hill country

The Chandon flows through the area from southwest to northeast in a shallow valley depression up to 300 m wide. The village lies on the hill west of the river; the valley and the elevated location therefore provide two clearly distinct geographical reference points. The former municipality’s territory encompasses molasse hills shaped by Ice Age glaciers between the Broye plain and the Sarine Valley. This broader context describes not just the village, but also the landscape of the former municipality. Villarepos can thus be understood both as a specific village location and as part of a hill country between the plain and the valley.

Historical background and protected buildings

Until 31 December 2016, Villarepos was a political municipality in the Lake District of the Canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. On 1 January 2017, it merged with Barberêche, Courtepin and Wallenried to form the municipality of Courtepin. The dates clearly distinguish its former administrative status from the subsequent merger. This distinction is also useful for understanding the landscape information: the former municipality’s territory provides the broader geographical context, while the village description refers specifically to Villarepos.

The protected buildings are also identified by village section and category. In the Villarepos section, the Eglise Saint-Etienne is classified as a protected building in Category 1. The Ancienne Tour, ancienne Pinte de l'Etoile and the Maison de Pierre-Xavier Folly in the same section belong to Category 2. In Chandossel, the Chapelle Saint-Sébastien is classified as Category 1. The four buildings mentioned are therefore spread across two village sections and two protection categories: two belong to Category 1 and two to Category 2.

Hiking and getting around

The Avenches–Morat hiking route passes through the village of Villarepos. It is 12.8 km long, takes 3 hours and 10 minutes, and is rated easy. For this hike, you can take the train back from Murten railway station. Check the route details and train connections before setting off; the distance, duration and rating may change if the route is modified.

Another hike leads from Villarepos via Cormérod to Chandossel. It follows a paved path along the Ruisseau des Echelles to Chandossel; the return to Villarepos follows another paved path near the Chandon. The two hikes differ in their described routes: one passes through Villarepos on the Avenches–Morat connection, while the other goes from Villarepos via Cormérod and Chandossel, returning near the Chandon.

Regional bus line 558 is relevant for travel between Domdidier, Avenches, Villarepos and Chandossel. The timetable is valid from 17 August 2026. If you plan to take the bus to get there or travel between these places, check the relevant times before setting off.
