Wine trails, archaeological sites and viewpoints give a trip to Bas-Vully a variety of possible focuses. You can choose between routes on Mont Vully, cultural history near Môtier and Sugiez, or an excursion to the public beach at Nant. The trails’ starting points and themes make it easy to put together activities based on your interests.

Trails on Mont Vully

The Sentier viticole La Riviera can start in Sugiez, Praz or MĂ´tier. The Sentier historique offers a different route: it starts at Sugiez railway station, crosses the Broye Canal and then leads to a vineyard slope. This historical trail is signposted both from Sugiez railway station and from the landing stages at Praz and MĂ´tier. It leads to the Grottes des Roches Grises above the wine-growing village of MĂ´tier.

The botanical trail starts in the village of Praz and heads towards Vau de Praz. Around 32 trees and shrubs are marked along the trail, and four information panels provide additional details. The route also offers views of the Vully vineyards and the lake. The trails therefore differ not only in their starting points: the botanical trail focuses on plants and views, while the historical trail leads to the Grottes des Roches Grises.

Archaeology and heritage

The Celtic oppidum of Mont Vully is listed in the federal register of archaeological sites of national importance. It is also included in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property under Mont-Vully (Bas-Vully). Another archaeological site is the MĂ´tier I pile-dwelling settlement: it is largely preserved on land and provides important information about the northern shore of Lake Murten. Guided tours of Vully can focus on the wine trail, the historical trail or the botanical trail. Guided visits can also include the architectural heritage of Praz and/or MĂ´tier.

Views and lakeshore

From the summit of Mont Vully, the panorama stretches across the Alps, the Jura and the Three Lakes region. A winding road leads from Sugiez or MĂ´tier to the summit, a journey of a few kilometres. The public beach at Nant has a playground, a small barbecue area, a football field and a beach volleyball court. It also offers a view of Murten. These places cater to different interests, with trails and viewpoints on Mont Vully alongside lakeside activities.

Gâteau de Vully and the Fête des vendanges

In Sugiez, Boulangerie Pâtisserie Tea Room Guillaume specialises in Gâteau de Vully. The varieties include sweet, savoury and almond versions. The Fête des vendanges du Vully is held every year in the wine-growing village of Praz; the programme includes concerts, parades and other activities. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates for your preferred travel period.

Getting there and finding accommodation
