The Gérine winds through Marly and flows into the Sarine near the district of Le Port. The area also offers a circular trail to Pierrafortscha, a distinctive ecclesiastical heritage and activities for exercise and leisure. If you are considering Marly as a travel destination, you can choose between river landscapes, cultural history and a range of activities.

Landscape and Location of Marly

Marly lies in the Sarine district at an elevation of about 627 m above sea level, around 3.5 km south of Fribourg. The municipality includes the settlements of Marly-le-Grand and Marly-le-Petit, the hamlet of Chésalles and a number of individual farms. These places and farms are part of a landscape that extends beyond the settled areas: the municipal territory includes the broad valley floor of the Ärgera, known in French as the Gérine, shortly before it flows into the Sarine. It also includes adjacent molasse hills, wooded slopes such as Bois de l’Eglise and Vers le Bois, and a northern high plateau.

The surrounding river meadows, forests and fields also shape the options for walks and cycling trips. The local climate is described as temperate, with warm summers and mild winters. The landscape and changing seasons offer different ways to experience Marly, so the town need not be reduced to a single type of excursion.

The Gérine is also a specific point of reference for time spent outdoors: it flows through Marly and reaches the Sarine at Le Port. You can swim in it in warm weather. If you plan to swim, check the river conditions and local safety information. This makes clear that swimming is a seasonal possibility, not a general guarantee regardless of the weather and conditions.

Church, Bells and Circular Trail

The Église Saints-Pierre-et-Paul brings together furnishings from different periods. Visitors can see a late Gothic baptismal font, a polychrome wooden Madonna copied from a 14th-century sculpture, and a Baroque high altar from the 18th century. There is also a contemporary altar by Antoine Claraz and a contemporary organ dating from 1982. The mix of older and newer works makes the church interior a distinctive cultural highlight in Marly.

The bells also tell a story of different periods: the peal comprises five bells, including three of historical significance, dating from 1574, 1614 and 1742. The bell from 1614 is the large bell. In addition, the church stands on foundations believed to be nearly a thousand years old; they are estimated to date from the 10th to the 12th century. This date range remains an estimate and complements the specific dates of the bells with a much older history that is described with appropriate caution.

For an outing beyond the church, consider the “Sentier autour de Marly et Pierrafortscha.” This circular trail starts and ends at the “Marly-Cité” bus stop. It leads to Pierrafortscha, a granite erratic boulder beside which an information panel explains its geological origins. You can also discover four chapels along the trail. The boulder, panel and chapels provide several cultural and natural points of interest along the route, without specifying a walking time or distance.

Swimming and a Time-Limited Experience

Piscine de Marly has facilities for the public, athletes and schools. These include a 25-metre pool with six lanes and a 110 m² diving pool with a one-metre springboard and a three-metre platform. Check the current opening hours as you plan your visit.

Another activity is Xcape’s large-scale escape room game in Marly. The experience lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes in total: 15 minutes for the welcome and instructions, one hour for the game and a further 15 minutes for the debrief at the exit. In terms of timing, Xcape is clearly different from the area’s natural and cultural highlights: its total duration is specified, while the other options range from walks to spending time by the river. When choosing a destination for your stay, you can consider whether you are drawn to Marly primarily for its river landscape, historical details or a leisure activity with a clearly defined duration.
