On the eastern shore: districts, reeds and birdlife
Portalban lies on the eastern shore of Lake Neuchâtel, opposite the city of Neuchâtel, and by the Ruisseau de la Contentenetta stream. Payerne is 11 km to the south as the crow flies. Two districts mark different elevations: Portalban-Dessous lies on the flat lakeside strip at 435 m, while Portalban-Dessus is on the higher plateau at 475 m. The difference in elevation is 40 m.
The flat lakeside strip is up to 700 m wide. Except for the area around Portalban, it is characterised by a belt of reeds and swamp forest known as Les Grèves. On the southeastern shore lies the Chevroux–Portalban waterbird reserve, whose extensive reed beds define the landscape. Many waterbirds use the reserve as a resting place in winter; in summer, it provides a habitat for numerous breeding birds. It is classified as an area of international importance. Portalban is considered one of the “windows” into the Grande Cariçaie nature reserve.
Water sports, protected area and cycling route
Swisskite is the local kitesurfing, wingfoiling and pumpfoiling club at the Portalban spot. Portasub offers children and adults an introduction to scuba diving. An experienced diver accompanies them and ensures their safety; the club provides all the equipment. Portasub can be booked for your next dive. Boating on the lake near the Grande Cariçaie reed beds at Portalban is subject to strict nature conservation measures.
The Mittelland Route is also a useful point of reference when planning a cycling trip: Portalban lies roughly halfway along Stage 6, between Ins and Yverdon. The stage is 51 km long in total and rated easy. The approximate midpoint of the route and the rating for the entire stage are useful details if you are considering including this route in your plans.
Summer market and practical planning
Portalban’s annual summer market is a local tradition. Craftspeople and producers showcase a wide selection of local crafts and products. The market canteen serves fried fish and refreshments. The seasons bring different highlights: winter resting places for waterbirds contrast with the summer breeding season and the market.
Boat connections run between Portalban and Neuchâtel, and between Portalban and Cudrefin; it is worth checking the timetable when planning your trip. A bus from Avenches goes to the “Portalban, village” stop. From there, walk along Route du Port to the end. La Nacelle campsite in Portalban offers pitches for motorhomes, caravans and tents. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Delley-Portalban, you can use your preferred travel dates and interests in nature, water sports, cycling routes or markets to guide your planning.
