Wiedlisbach’s medieval layout and St. Catherine’s Chapel, integrated into the town wall, bring local history to life in the townscape. The Kornhaus Museum offers a distinct cultural focus with its ceramics exhibition. When planning your trip, also take into account the annual Räbeliechtli lantern procession in November and the current status of the barefoot trail.

The Medieval Small Town

The historic town layout forms a compact rectangle with a main street and a parallel side street. A ring wall about nine metres high and 1.7 metres thick surrounds the complex. Wiedlisbach has a well-preserved medieval town centre. In recognition of exemplary care of the town, the municipality received the Henri-Louis-Wakker Prize in 1974 and an award from the Council of Europe in 1975. Wiedlisbach is a small town in the Canton of Bern without a church; the Wiedlisbach Tower is the only corner bastion in the town complex.

The town was probably founded and granted town rights around 1240, presumably because of its strategically important location on the north–south trade routes. The western entrance to the small town also has a striking architectural landmark: a corner building erected by the Canton of Bern in 1693 stands there.

Chapel and Kornhaus Museum

In the historic Hinterstädtli, St. Catherine’s Chapel is integrated into a row of houses and forms part of the town wall on the east side. Its paintings date from the 15th century. The frescoes depict the Passion of Christ as well as legends of Saints Catherine, Dorothy and Mary Magdalene.

The Kornhaus Wiedlisbach Museum is devoted, among other things, to ceramics: it features one of Switzerland’s largest and most varied ceramics exhibitions. The collection includes some of the oldest surviving pieces from Swiss manufactories. The permanent exhibition spans four floors and draws on a collection more than 120 years old. This places two distinct aspects of cultural history side by side in the small town: the religious imagery of the chapel and the development of ceramics.

Small-Town Tour and Legends Trail

The “Echoes from Wiedlisbach” small-town tour takes you through the town on a historical journey of discovery. It offers insights into the past at 13 buildings; at six of them, visitors can scan a QR code and listen to the story. The stops make the tour a way to connect historical information with individual buildings.

The Legends Trail features stories from the collection of Elisabeth Pfluger. Most of the signs use stories originally compiled in the Solothurn dialect and adapted into standard German for presentation. Wiedlisbach railway station is one of the starting points for the various Legends Trail routes. The paths lead from the southern foot of the Jura up to the ridge of the first Jura range. A free map is available from municipal offices, in restaurants and in information boxes in car parks, as well as on request.

The barefoot trail is at the edge of the forest near Stierenweid, above the ASM railway station, and is signposted from Wiedlisbach railway station. Its varied route features uneven natural surfaces that can be walked on barefoot. On 26 August 2026, the trail was damaged by logging work and was not passable; it was planned to reopen in the second half of 2026, after the work was completed. Check the current trail status before visiting.

November Event and Planning Your Stay

The Räbeliechtli lantern procession takes place every year on the first or second Wednesday in November. Children walk singing with their Räbeliechtli lanterns to the Hinterstädtli, where tea and Züpfe bread are offered to participants. As the event can fall on either of two Wednesdays, check the exact date for your travel year.

If you are looking for hotels in Wiedlisbach, you can plan your travel dates around your main interest: the small town, chapel and museum offer a historical focus, while the Räbeliechtli lantern procession takes place on a date in November. If the barefoot trail is one of your destinations, its current status is key. This lets you weigh up your planned experiences and the timing of your stay together.
