In Niederbipp, the landscape at the foot of the Jura, hiking opportunities and a rich local history come together. The village lies at 468 m above sea level, roughly halfway between Olten and Solothurn and around 14 kilometres as the crow flies northeast of Solothurn. It stretches across the flat alluvial fan formed by the Bipperbach stream at the foot of the Jura and the Bipperamt plain in the Oberaargau. This offers different options for a stay: nature and hiking routes, cultural sites or an outing with the Bipperlisi puzzle.
Lehnfluh and the landscape at the foot of the Jura
The small Lehnfluh nature reserve lies on the southern slope of the Jura, on the border with the canton of Solothurn. Its mosaic of habitats includes open dry sites, rocky areas, extensively managed scrubland and oak-hornbeam forests. Lehnfluh is also considered a hotspot for xerophytic plants—that is, plants adapted to extreme dryness. This mix of habitats gives the area its distinctive character. In the nature reserve, you must not alter either the natural state of the rocks or the plant growth; follow the applicable conservation rules.
Hiking: circular routes and the Legends Trail
Eight circular hiking routes start and finish at Niederbipp railway station. There is no connecting bus or return route to the car. Before setting out, check the route conditions and transport connections and plan your starting and finishing points accordingly. One of the circular routes described passes via Vordere Erlinsburg: it is 14.5 kilometres long, with 834 metres of ascent and 834 metres of descent, and takes around four hours and fifty minutes on foot. These figures give a specific idea of the scope of this route; they do not automatically apply to the other circuits.
The Legends Trail from Niederbipp starts at the aare-seeland-mobil railway station at the foot of the Jura and climbs to the ridge of the first Jura range. Its information boards connect the route with traditional stories: most of the texts come from a collection of tales in the Solothurn dialect compiled by Elisabeth Pfluger. You can get a free map of the Legends Trail from municipal offices, restaurants and information boards in car parks. This makes it easy to choose between a circular hike with specifically stated elevation figures and a route steeped in regional storytelling traditions.
Viewpoints and picnic spots
Above Waldenalp, the publicly accessible panoramic viewpoint offers views of Niederbipp and the Mittelland. Facilities include a large table, benches and a barbecue area; check whether they are available when you visit. Near RĂĽtihof, the Hallstatt-period burial mound now serves as a rest area with benches provided by the VVN. The Hallstatt period was part of the Early Iron Age and is dated to approximately 800 to 475 BC. The VVN also maintains a fire pit before the final climb to the rocks near Erlinsburg.
Church and culture in Niederbipp
The Reformed Church of Niederbipp lies outside the village at the foot of the Jura and dates back to a medieval place of worship. Its present-day appearance dates from 1669 and 1712. Inside, notable features include an elaborately carved Renaissance pulpit, an 18th-century baptismal font and stained-glass windows by Robert Giesbrecht from 1910. The different periods can be seen in both the building’s history and its furnishings.
The Räberstöckli adds a regular cultural programme to these historic sites. The cultural association organises exhibitions and events together with artists; the annual programme includes painting, stone and wood sculpture, arts and crafts, music, literature and theatre. The Räberstöckli is about a five-minute walk from Niederbipp SBB railway station. If you would like to combine your visit with an event, check the dates before your trip.
A family outing with the Bipperlisi puzzle
The Bipperlisi puzzle is a family outing on the railway line from Solothurn to Niederbipp. Puzzles are combined with information about the Bipperlisi’s 100-year railway history. The activity is aimed at children aged four to ten; the puzzle trail takes about an hour and a half, not including the outward and return journeys. It can be completed in any weather. At the end, there is a large playground, toilets, a changing table and a picnic area. For planning your time, it is especially important to keep the approximate puzzle duration separate from the travel time.
