Innereriz offers short winter hikes, cross-country ski tracks and trails through the mountain landscape. The routes differ considerably in length and walking time: a groomed circular trail takes about one hour, while another winter hike to Schangnau takes about two and a half hours. There are also circular cross-country skiing routes and mountain hikes over named passes. When planning your stay, you can focus on the activities you want to do and the time you have set aside for them.
Choose a winter hike by time and distance
The groomed winter hiking trail runs from Innereriz via Alp Drüschhubel and back. The circular route is about 3 km long, with a stated walking time of approximately 1 hour. Grooming is seasonal. The Zulg Trail starts at Innereriz Säge and follows the Zulg and the cross-country ski trail to Eriz Linden. This route is around 5 km long and takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to walk.
Another winter hiking route leads from Innereriz via Rotmoos to Schangnau. It is about 6 km long, with an estimated walking time of approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes; winter conditions affect its accessibility. The time differences are clear: the route via DrĂĽschhubel is the shortest of the three winter routes described, the Zulg Trail takes somewhat longer, and the route to Schangnau requires considerably more time. Check local conditions before setting out on this hike.
Cross-country ski tracks, sledging and lessons
The main starting point for the winter cross-country ski tracks is at the Geissegg car park. The Hohgant track is 6 km long and groomed for both classic and skating techniques. The Zulg track covers 8 km and is also groomed for both techniques; the Eriztal track is 9 km long and groomed for skating. The tracks form circular routes along the Zulg as far as GysenbĂĽhl or Bieten and back to the main starting point. The routes mentioned therefore differ both in length and in the technique for which they are groomed.
When winter conditions are suitable, two 300 m sledging runs are available in Innereriz. They can be reached directly from the Geissegg car park via a bridge. The safe, fenced-off winter play area is also seasonal. The Eriz Swiss Ski and Snowboard School offers group and private ski and snowboard lessons; lessons are seasonal and subject to arrangement. These activities complement the hiking and cross-country skiing options, although they do not all start from the same place.
Rotmoos and trails through the mountain landscape
The circular hike “On the Sunny Side of Honegg” starts at Innereriz/Säge and passes along the roughly 65-hectare high moor and Rotmoos-Breitwang nature reserve. The area has been protected since 1944. Since 1996, Rotmoos has also been listed in the inventory of peatland landscapes of outstanding beauty and national importance.
A mountain hike leads from Innereriz via the Grünenberg Pass through the Hohgant–Seefeld nature reserve to Gemmenalphorn and onwards to Niederhorn. Other hiking trails lead from Lake Thun through the Justistal valley and over the Sichle to Innereriz, from Sigriswil via Zettenalp, and from Habkern over the Grünenberg Pass. To reach Rotmoos, a route runs from the Eriz, Säge stop on line 41 or from the Säge restaurant up to Hängschtli and into Rotmoos. Check local conditions before setting out.
Getting there and planning
The Thun–Eriz bus serves the Eriz, Säge and Garage stops. Check the current timetable before travelling. For winter activities, also take the relevant seasonal and weather conditions into account. This applies to grooming of the winter hiking trail, accessibility of the winter route to Schangnau and the sledging runs. This makes it possible to choose a hike or cross-country ski track to match your planned timeframe without confusing walking times with route lengths.
Beyond the individual routes, it is also worth exploring the wider hiking landscape between Eriz and Horrenbach-Buchen, which offers viewpoints and places to linger. Innereriz can thus be explored through both specific winter activities and hiking trails and protected moorland. For your stay, choose the activities you actually want to do, and bear in mind the starting points and seasonal conditions mentioned.
