A gently rolling landscape shaped by the Aare Glacier and distinctive historic buildings give Niedermuhlern, on the Längenberg, its own character. The village lies west of the Gürbe Valley; from Niedermuhlern, views extend to Lake Thun and the Bernese Alps. When planning your trip, you can choose from trails, cultural heritage, and activities related to astronomy and nature.
The Längenberg and its moraine landscape
The municipality covers part of the Längenberg. Its rounded contours were smoothed by the Aare Glacier, and moraine deposits can be found in several places. Niedermuhlern is located in the Gantrisch Regional Nature Park. This landscape provides the setting for hikes and scenic views, without limiting all destinations to a single route.
Two different astronomy experiences
Space Eye is a publicly accessible observatory and experience centre for astronomy and the environment in the Bern region. Its offerings include a modern 8K planetarium, an interactive exhibition and a space laboratory. The centre is wheelchair accessible and hosts special events on astronomy, space travel and nature throughout the year. Visitors must book a ticket or reserve a specific time slot in advance. From Niedermuhlern, you can reach Space Eye on foot via the Space Eye Experience Trail or, at certain times, by Space Eye shuttle.
The Sonnenturm Uecht offers a different format: guided tours and live demonstrations of solar activity are available on request for individuals and small groups of up to around eight people. From the Niedermuhlern Baumgärtli postbus stop, it is about a 20-minute walk to the observatory. The choice therefore also depends on the kind of programme you are looking for: the planetarium, exhibition and events at Space Eye, or a visit on request focused on solar activity at the Sonnenturm.
Hiking trails and views at Fallenbach
Niedermuhlern has hiking trails along the paths of the Way of St James. The Längenberg Farm Trail starts at the church in Zimmerwald, heads towards Niedermuhlern and then continues towards Obermuhlern to the hamlet of Underi Schür. This easy walk is well suited to pushchairs. It offers a route connected to the farming and landscape of the Längenberg.
The Gürbetal High Trail passes through Fallenbach in Niedermuhlern. The Fallenbach fire pit is located along this trail at an elevation of 800 metres. From here, there are unobstructed views south across the Gürbe Valley, Lake Thun and the Alps. The fire pit has around twelve seats, firewood and a grill grate; there is no covered seating. It can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. There is no parking, and the nearest public transport stop is about 1.5 kilometres away. No advance booking is required.
Bachmühle, farmhouse and church
Bachmühle Niedermuhlern was built in 1773 and is considered one of the grandest mill buildings in the Canton of Bern. Rich paintings adorn the timber framing and the round-arched dormer; an impressive two-flight outdoor staircase made of sandstone blocks leads to the raised ground floor. The Niedermuhlern, Bachmühle public transport stop is located by the mill.
The Fallenbach farmhouse dates from 1760. On a moraine terrace of the Längenberg, the house, its outbuildings and the box garden form a complete farmstead. Elaborate woodwork and inscriptions on the doors and gates are among its distinctive features. Nearby Zimmerwald Church was built between 1697 and 1699. It is a simple, broad preaching hall with a continuous flat wooden ceiling and serves the political municipalities of Niedermuhlern and Wald, including Zimmerwald and Englisberg.
Accommodation options in Niedermuhlern include bed and breakfasts, farm stays and visits to working stables. Together with the trails, cultural heritage and different astronomy experiences, these options can help guide your choice of stay.
