Burgistein offers a specific reason to travel in May and two different route perspectives. The traditional Ryfflischiessen takes place every year in May; the Gantrisch Legends Trail can be started here, while the Via Jacobi stage from Wattenwil to Schwarzenburg passes through the area. Burgistein is also part of the Gantrisch Nature Park. When planning, it is worth treating the event date, the cycling tour and the pilgrimage stage as separate reasons to travel. The wider area’s landscape includes mountains, deep gorges, wetlands and moors.
By bike or along the Via Jacobi
The Gantrisch Legends Trail is an e-bike experience and a themed cycling route of around 50 kilometres through the Gantrisch Nature Park. It can be started in Burgistein and follows the signposted SwitzerlandMobility Veloland Route 333. The distance should be understood as an approximate figure.
The Via Jacobi stage from Wattenwil to Schwarzenburg also passes through Burgistein. It is 21 kilometres long and takes 5 hours and 50 minutes. The distance and duration refer to the entire stage between Wattenwil and Schwarzenburg, not just the section through Burgistein. The two routes therefore differ in type and length: a cycling route of around 50 kilometres and a 21-kilometre pilgrimage stage with a stated duration.
Burgistein Castle along the way
On the Via Jacobi stage, the trail passes the imposing Burgistein Castle shortly before reaching the village. The present-day complex dates from the 16th century. Burgistein Castle is privately owned and is not open to visitors. When planning, you can therefore connect the historical aspect with the route, but not with a visit inside the castle.
A traditional event in May
The traditional Ryfflischiessen has taken place every year in May since 1925. If you are planning a visit around this event, May is the first date to bear in mind; check the specific event dates before travelling. This lets you plan your trip around the date of the tradition, rather than considering the event only as general cultural information.
Barbecue spots and camping
Burgistein has several barbecue spots along the GĂĽrbe or in the upper part of the municipality. They offer a separate way to enjoy the outdoors alongside the routes: instead of focusing on a longer journey, you can plan your visit around a barbecue spot. The location details provide a general guide within the municipality.
For an overnight stay, Camping Burgistein offers pitches for permanent campers, seasonal campers and day visitors. These categories represent different types of stay. Availability and conditions may change; check both for your specific dates before travelling.
