Perrefitte brings together gorges, streams and routes leading up to the Jura heights. The landscape is at the heart of the discoveries on offer: in the Gorges de Perrefitte, paths lead from the village to higher pastures above Moutier; the Combe Fabet is a distinctive gorge-like landscape in its own right. There is also a former school building with neoclassical features. This offers a chance to explore both nature and local history, without combining them into a single excursion.
Location and ridges
Perrefitte lies at an elevation of around 600 m in the Moutier Jura valley, about two kilometres west of Moutier as the crow flies. The municipality covers the westernmost part of the Grand Val, which is drained by the Chalière. The Combe Fabet is also part of this landscape: it forms a gorge-like side valley of the Chalière. These geographical details help place the village between the valley and the Jura heights.
The ridges have different reference points. The Jura ridge landscape at Moron reaches an elevation of 1,140 m. The Montagne de Moutier range reaches 1,158 m, making it the highest point in the municipality. These two elevations therefore do not describe the same point in the terrain: one refers to the Jura ridges at Moron, the other to the highest point in the municipality. Together, they give an impression of how the valley opens out towards the surrounding heights.
Gorges and routes
The Gorges de Perrefitte begin at the edge of the village in the direction of Souboz. Nature trails and wooden steps lead through the gorge from Perrefitte to the higher pastures above Moutier. A hiking trail through the Gorges follows the Chalière stream. These details describe both the route along the stream and the connection from the village up to the pastures; they are two useful points of reference if you would like to explore the landscape on foot.
The Combe Fabet offers a different perspective. Its rock walls are 10 to 20 metres high, and the gorge follows a dry streambed. From Perrefitte, it leads up to the Jura heights. Unlike the paths through the Gorges de Perrefitte, the Combe Fabet is characterised by its rock walls and dry streambed.
Hikes associated with Perrefitte
The hike “A travers les Gorges de Perrefitte” begins and ends in Perrefitte. Its route follows the Chalière to the hamlet of Plain Fahyn. This identifies both the starting and ending point and a specific destination. The “Chemin de Moron” also begins and ends in Perrefitte. Both hikes are therefore connected to the village as their starting and ending point; the route through the Gorges also follows the stream to Plain Fahyn.
This connection to the village is useful when planning an excursion: you can use Perrefitte as the starting point for the two named hikes and follow the route through the Gorges by tracing its course along the Chalière to the hamlet of Plain Fahyn. The paths and wooden steps leading up to the pastures add another route towards higher ground. The Combe Fabet, meanwhile, is a distinctive landscape feature in its own right, with a dry streambed and striking rock walls; it need not be considered part of either of the named hikes.
A look at local history
A former school building from the late 19th century stands at Sous le Tacon 24. The building is constructed of masonry and designed in the neoclassical style; it also has a roof turret. Alongside the gorges and ridges, this gives the village an architectural facet. Here, neoclassical describes the building’s style, while the roof turret is a distinct structure rising from the roof.
If you are considering a stay in Perrefitte, there are several specific points of interest: the gorge landscape, the routes towards the pastures and Jura heights, two hikes that start and end in the village, and the former schoolhouse. Nature and architecture offer different reasons to get to know the village; the routes and landscape features described can each be explored on their own.
