Moutier combines distinctive cultural sites with the characteristic topography of the Jura: the municipality in the Swiss canton of Jura forms a district of its own. It lies at about 535 m above sea level and around 10 km as the crow flies south of Delémont. When planning your stay, consider whether church art and museums or river landscapes, gorges and nature are to be the main focus.

Art and industrial history

The Chapelle de Chalière features Carolingian frescoes. The Collégiale St-Germain has stained-glass windows by Coghuf and Voirol, while the Eglise Notre-Dame de la Prévôté has stained-glass windows by Manessier. The three sites offer different highlights: frescoes in the chapel and stained-glass work in the two churches. Moutier’s sacred art can therefore be explored through both its visual forms and the artists named here.

The Musée du Tour Automatique uses more than 50 lathes to tell the history of the automatic lathe from 1872 to the present day. A villa dating from 1895 also provides a link to industrial history: it belonged to Nicolas Junker, founder of the automatic lathe industry in Moutier, and is connected to the museum.

The Musée jurassien des Arts de Moutier presents changing exhibitions featuring artists from the Jura region, other parts of Switzerland and abroad. The museum currently preserves more than 8,000 works dating from the 1950s to the present day. The changing exhibitions and the collection offer two distinct ways to engage with the visual arts: through current exhibition themes and through a collection spanning a long period of time.

Two guided walking tours are also offered in Moutier. “Sur les traces de St-Germain” focuses on St-Germain, while the other explores industrial buildings dating from around 1900. Both tours must be booked in advance. Their themes are clearly distinct: one explores the history surrounding St-Germain, while the other focuses on industrial architecture.

The Birs, gorges and nature

Moutier extends across the basin of the Moutier Valley, also known as the Grand Val, on both sides of the Birs above the mouth of the Raus stream and along the adjacent slopes. The Birs runs through the Grand Val from south to north, cutting across the Jura’s chain structure, and forms significant gorges both above and below Moutier. To the north lies the Gorges de Moutier, a typical Jura cluse with imposing limestone cliffs, where the Birs cuts through the Mont Raimeux anticline.

The municipality extends northwest onto the Montagne de Moutier. At Les Clos, it reaches 1,170 m above sea level; several sinkholes dot the area. Other landscape features include extensive Jura high pastures with towering spruce trees, standing alone or in groups. The topography described here thus extends from the valley basin and river to higher-lying pastures.

The Sentier Nature introduces characteristic plants and animals in their natural habitats, including woodland edges, ponds, forests, streams and pastures. The route links these different habitat types as a nature theme, while the Gorges de Moutier and the high pastures exemplify the striking geological and open landscapes.

Special places and trip planning

The Pavillon des Golats is a viewpoint above Moutier. It can be reached from Place du Stand via the Parcours Vita. Numerous large sauropod footprints were discovered at the CĂ´te Picard site in the municipality of Moutier; experts conclusively identified them as such in 2019. A wooden platform was built at the entrance to the site, allowing visitors to look directly at the rock face bearing the tracks. Check the conditions at the site before visiting.

The events calendar can also help with timing your trip: the Fête de la Vieille Ville takes place every two years, alternating with the Braderie prévôtoise. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific dates.

Moutier is a railway hub on the Basel–Geneva route. This provides a point of reference for arriving and continuing your journey by train; check the timetable for your planned travel date. When choosing what to focus on in Moutier, you can then decide whether to devote more of your time to cultural sites, landscapes or one of the recurring events.
