Rokwiler brings together the history of the Foire de Chaindon with nature and walking experiences on Montoz and in the Forêt de Chaindon. This gives you a choice of cultural discoveries as well as walks, wildlife watching or a mountain bike ride during your stay. The village lies at 731 m above sea level in the Birstal and the broad basin of the Vallée de Tavannes. South of the Birs lowlands, the municipal area extends to the Jura range of Montoz; at 1,312 m above sea level, its highest point is located there.
Landscape and Trails
In suitable weather, Werdtberg offers views of the Bernese Alps, Chasseral and the Seeland. It is also a waypoint on the Montoz ridge trail (426). The Forêt de Chaindon offers a different setting: relatively flat terrain and intersecting paths make it possible to take walks of varying lengths. Along the way, you may spot birds, foxes, frogs and deer, among other wildlife. Local natural features include the Source aux sables and the spring known as Reusreux, which emerges from a tree.
Below Montoz, the pastures offer spacious areas for picnics and walks. Mushrooms can also be gathered, although this depends on conditions and the applicable rules. The wooded pastures encourage the development of flora and fauna. There is a picnic area for a break, available by prior reservation. It includes a fire pit with a grill grate; tables and benches for around 30 people are available under the covered shelter. As reservation arrangements may change, it is advisable to check in advance.
History and Cultural Heritage
The earliest documented records of the Foire de Chaindon date back to 2 September 1626. Since 2017, the fair has been included on the Swiss Confederation’s list of intangible cultural heritage. It is scheduled for the first Monday in September; check the event dates before your trip. Rokwiler lies on the Sonceboz-Sombeval–Moutier railway line, and the station is in the heart of the Foire de Chaindon. If the fair is the reason for your trip, it is also worth checking the current timetable. Chaindon is also home to the 18th-century St-Léonard church, with its frescoes and stained-glass windows.
The 25 km Mountain Bike Route No. 863 starts in Rokwiler and takes you to discover the Roman road and Pierre-Pertuis, with its distinctive rock arch. The stated route length distinguishes this cycling tour from the walking loops in the Forêt de Chaindon, which vary in length.
Mini Golf and Picnics
The mini golf course is in the centre of the village, between the schools and the playground. It is open to everyone, suitable for adults and children, and hosts competitions at national level. Opening periods may vary by season. Afterwards, you can enjoy drinks or ice cream at the Buvette; the offerings there may change.
