In Frauenkappelen, history is present both in the church and in a bell-ringing tradition that is still maintained today. There are also walking paths, cycling routes and jogging trails in the Spilwald forest, as well as hiking options by Lake Wohlen. This means different themes can shape a getaway: architectural history in the village, activities on a variety of routes and a hiking stage with clearly stated timings.

The municipality gives ten minutes by car from the centre of Bern to Frauenkappelen as a guide. The Westside leisure and shopping centre is nearby.

Monastery History and the Church

An Augustinian nunnery in Frauenkappelen is first documented in writing in 1240. The former monastery church was completed around 1300 or in the early 14th century. The eastern wall of the former church has been preserved in the present-day church building. Inside, surviving remains reveal a three-part layout consisting of the altar area, the nuns’ choir and the lay area. The present-day Reformed church was built from 1574 onwards and closely follows the former monastery church as a model in its formal design. These dates mark different milestones: the first written record of the monastery, the completion of the former church and the start of construction of the later church.

Bell-Ringing Tradition and Peace Linden

Hand-ringing is still a tradition today. Before church services, all three bells are rung manually for 15 minutes. The traditional eleven o’clock ringing has a different character: from Monday to Saturday at 11 a.m., the large church bell rings for five minutes. The occasion, number of bells and duration distinguish the two forms of ringing.

Another landmark associated with remembrance is the Peace Linden on the HĂĽbeli, west of Frauenkappelen. It was intended to be planted in gratitude that the country had been spared war and as a reminder to preserve peace. The inauguration ceremony took place on 23 June 1946.

Paths and Nature

The Spilwald forest has numerous walking paths, cycling routes and jogging trails. Lake Wohlen is recommended as a local recreation area with a lakeside path. One route passes through the wooded slopes and ravines of Lake Wohlen before climbing from Jaggisbachau to Frauenkappelen. Check current trail conditions before hiking.

The ViaBerna stage from Aarberg to Frauenkappelen is 24 kilometres long, takes 6 hours and 35 minutes, and includes 660 metres of ascent. This gives you a clear idea of how long a longer hike will take. Check current conditions before setting out.
