The former monastery buildings of Fraubrunnen Castle, the mill and the inns continue to shape the town centre together. Here, a long history of the monastery meets a townscape also shaped by other historic buildings. The extensive gardens of Fraubrunnen Castle invite you to relax.

Monastery History and Cultural Life

Fraubrunnen Monastery was founded by Cistercian nuns in the mid-13th century and secularised in 1528 during the Reformation. Some of its architectural significance can be seen in the south wing of the monastery complex: the largely preserved roof structure is one of the most impressive of its kind in the Canton of Bern.

The Fraubrunnen Castle Cellar also plays a part in the town’s cultural life. An association has run the venue for almost 50 years. It promotes cultural life in the region and provides the legal and financial framework for three different cultural offerings. The monastery complex and the Castle Cellar thus reflect different aspects of Fraubrunnen’s history: its historic heritage and a cultural programme that continues to be sustained today.

Grafenried and Historic Places of Remembrance

The Church of Grafenried is located near Fraubrunnen. It was remodelled in the Baroque style between 1745 and 1747 and houses significant interior furnishings dating from the 17th to the 19th century. Historically, it also served as a place of worship for the people of Fraubrunnen.

The walk “Walk from Grafenried to Fraubrunnen Castle” links the church hill in Grafenried with Fraubrunnen Castle. A short detour follows the bush-lined Bärebach stream; the route also crosses the railway line used by today’s Bern–Solothurn regional railway (RBS). The route described therefore connects two specific points without assuming a walking time.

North of Fraubrunnen, at the junction for BĂĽren zum Hof, a war memorial commemorates the Battle of the Guglers in 1375 and the skirmish against the French in 1798. It consists of two three-metre-high granite steles and edging stones bordered with limestone; a majestic lime tree is also part of the ensemble.

The Fraubrunnen Moos and Its Landscape

Since the 1990s, targeted efforts have been made in the Fraubrunnen Moos to promote habitats for the endangered northern lapwing and other species. A renaturation project created new bodies of water, ruderal areas and a protective fence in 2016. The area meets the requirements for a nationally important amphibian spawning site; the relevant perimeter has since been recognised by the federal government. Before visiting, check the perimeter boundaries and visitor rules.

Fraubrunnen also offers various ways to enjoy the outdoors. The broad Emme plain nearby is ideal for cycling. The wider area combines the renaturalised Emme Valley with extensive forests and agricultural land. The gently rolling terrain lends itself to road cycling, touring by bike, mountain biking and hiking—different ways to experience the landscape.

Leisure Activities and Trails

Fraubrunnen outdoor swimming pool is located in the Fraubrunnen Moos. Its kiosk offers drinks, ice cream, hot snacks and a range of sweets; the selection may vary by season. There is also an adventure playground at the school, offering leisure activities for young and old alike. The facilities at a playground may change.

Those interested in a longer pilgrimage stage can find a section of the Basel Route in Fraubrunnen: it runs from Fraubrunnen to Bern and is 24.5 kilometres long. Together with the walk from Grafenried to the castle, this highlights the difference between a named route with two stated endpoints and a pilgrimage stage with a specified distance. You can choose between the two based on your available time and preferred type of route.
