Rocky heathland and historic buildings give Pieterlen two clear themes for a stay. The village lies on the language border between the southern Jura slopes and BĂĽttenberg, by the renaturalised Leugene and within a local recreation area. If you are looking for hotels in Pieterlen, you can start by considering whether nature, trails or architectural history will shape your stay.
Rocky Heathland and Nature Trails
The Felsenheide nature reserve near Pieterlen is a protected area with glacial striations and erratic boulders. It provides a habitat for characteristic rocky-heathland vegetation, including relict species, downy oak, hornbeam and boxwood stands, as well as numerous reptiles and insects. The area can be explored via the “Nature” themed trail established by the municipality. This nature theme brings both the geological formations and the distinctive habitats into focus.
Walks, Cycling Routes and the Gschichtli Trail
There are several ways to plan your routes: the municipality offers six themed walks for getting to know Pieterlen and its surroundings. There are also numerous hiking and cycling routes along the southern Jura slopes and into the lower Seeland region. The walks take in Pieterlen and its surrounding area, while the hiking and cycling routes head towards the southern Jura slopes and the lower Seeland region.
The Gschichtli Trail offers something different. Along a route just under 2 km long, ten QR-code stations tell a continuing story. The changing audio stories include fairy tales, fables, adventure stories and fantasy stories for children aged 4 to 12; the total listening time is 20 minutes. A smartphone is needed to scan the QR codes. The municipality also recommends bringing a picnic and a charged smartphone. For planning purposes, note that the route length and listening time are two different figures: just under 2 km describes the route, while 20 minutes is the total audio time.
Church, Schlössli and Historic Village Centre
Pieterlen Church is first mentioned in 1228 in the cartulary of the Diocese of Lausanne. It preserves Romanesque architectural elements from the 11th or 12th century, including a baptismal font made of shell limestone and an image of an apostle. According to the latest dendrochronological dating, the richly painted Gothic choir dates from around 1340; a niche contains the tomb of a knight from the von Eptingen family. The building’s history thus encompasses several distinct historical layers.
The medieval archaeological heritage also includes graves and an artificially modified hill with a defensive moat, evidence of a former castle. From 1838 onwards, Schlössli Pieterlen was gradually rebuilt as a small medieval castle in the fashionable Romantic style of the time. Another historic building is the well-preserved Haus zum Himmel, dating from the 17th century and located on the old country road in Pieterlen. Characteristic features of the former pre-industrial farming village can still be seen in the historic village centre today.
