A Late Gothic sandstone building, a fresco from 1517 and a village centre with buildings dating back to the 15th century give Oberburg a distinctive cultural and historical character. At the same time, the municipality extends from the village on the valley floor to hilly terrain at just under 900 m above sea level. If you are looking for a destination that combines architectural history, natural landscapes and a hiking route towards Wasenegg, you can shape your stay around these different highlights.

Village History and Architecture

The historic village centre preserves a remarkable ensemble. It lies on the gently rising slope of a spur of the Rothöhe, giving the buildings a staggered layout. This arrangement is as much a part of the townscape as the historic buildings, which date back to the 15th century.

Oberburg Church is a Late Gothic sandstone building. Its four-storey front tower was built in 1497 by Leonhard HĂĽpschi. A fresco from 1517 depicting the Holy Kinship can be seen on the south wall of the nave. The tower and the mural are two clearly dated points of reference for the local history of architecture and art.

Staldenhof also combines architectural history with a distinctive style. Built in 1772, the farm is a cultural asset of national importance. Richly decorated and fully preserved, it exemplifies the Baroque delight in ornament. Staldenhof also has a place in literature: it served as the setting for «Die Schattmattbauern» by Carl Albert Loosli, the first modern Swiss crime novel.

Rothöhe adds its own sequence of buildings to these stories. In May 1910, it was built in the chalet style as a summer restaurant with a guesthouse, and shortly afterwards renamed a spa hotel. The original buildings burned to the ground in 1972; Rothöhe was rebuilt in 1979. The area thus brings together different building periods and historical uses without merging them into a single origin story.

Nature at Oberburger Schachen

Southeast of the village, the Oberburger Schachen nature reserve covers a stretch of the river and the banks of the Emme. The alluvial habitat in the protected area is of national importance. Schachen is therefore a natural highlight in its own right, alongside the village centre’s architectural history. Before visiting, check the boundaries of the protected area and the visitor rules in force.

From spring to autumn, a ranger is present in the area at irregular intervals and can answer questions about nature. This seasonal, irregular presence is not suitable as a fixed item on a schedule; if you are interested in speaking with a ranger, take this into account when planning your visit.

Hike to Wasenegg

From Oberburg railway station, follow the signs towards Wasenegg. The hiking route passes through Gübelwald, by the Emmental farmhouse Oschwand and through open woodland at the foot of Dürrägerteberg, leading to the Wasenegg viewpoint. From there, enjoy panoramic views of the Bernese Alps. The described route brings together woodland, a farm landscape and a clearly named viewpoint, making for a specific hiking theme during your stay.

Signposts may be updated, and route conditions can also change. Before setting out, check the current signs and conditions along the route. The route description does not provide a walking time or difficulty rating, so plan your hike using the latest information available locally.

Getting There and Planning Your Trip

Oberburg is connected to public transport by bus and S-Bahn. Check the timetables for your specific travel dates. When choosing a place to stay, consider which of Oberburg’s highlights matters most to you: the historic architecture in the village centre, the protected natural area or the hike with views of the Bernese Alps. Start planning with the interests you want to shape your stay, then match your plans with suitable transport connections and the latest route signs.
