Marked trails, art at Schönthal Monastery and the history of the Upper Hauenstein Pass give Langenbruck a diverse character. The municipality is located in the Waldenburg district in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. Two themes are especially important when planning a visit: tours through the countryside and cultural and historical discoveries.
Highland scenery and trails
Langenbruck lies in a hollow. Wooded ridges and steep slopes shape the landscape, with meadows and pastures at lower elevations. A large part of the municipality lies within the Belchen-Passwang region, which is listed in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes of National Importance. Belchenflue lies between Langenbruck and Eptingen at an elevation of 1,098.9 metres and offers panoramic views.
Around 100 kilometres of signposted hiking trails are available around Langenbruck. One specifically described tour is the Belchenflue circular hike: it leads to the Belchenflue viewpoint, is 9.06 kilometres long and takes 2.98 hours. The figures help with different planning questions: the trail network indicates the range of options, while the circular hike gives the length and duration of a specific tour.
There are also suitable options for cyclists: hiking and cycling in and around Langenbruck are activities set amid nature. Mountain bike routes are available for all skill levels. Looking at the Upper Hauenstein Pass also means considering a historic route: the pass near Langenbruck is 731 metres above sea level and is one of Switzerland’s oldest pass crossings. It is considered the shortest link between the Upper Rhine and the Central Plateau and connects areas to the north and south of the Jura.
Art and architectural history
Schönthal Monastery is one of the most significant historic and artistic architectural monuments in Basel-Landschaft. Along the paths and trails around the monastery are 33 artworks created specifically for the site by 23 artists. The monastery’s sculptures are a rare example throughout Switzerland of ecclesiastical culture from the mid-12th century. The monastery was founded in 1145 by the Counts of Frohburg, who handed it over to the Benedictine Order.
The Upper Hauenstein Pass also connects the landscape with history. In Roman times, the historic route over the pass linked Salodurum, present-day Solothurn, with Augusta Raurica near Kaiseraugst. In Langenbruck itself, four historic village fountains are among the significant landmarks of local history and architecture.
The Evangelical Reformed church was built towards the end of the 16th century, around 1589/90. Its Empire-style interior is the only one of its kind in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. The rectory is a Neoclassical Biedermeier house. The memorial trail between Lauchflue and Bölcheflue offers another historical perspective: twelve information panels cover the history and significance of the Hauenstein fortifications and the effects of the First World War on society and everyday life.
Leisure activities for different interests
The solar-powered toboggan run in Langenbruck offers more than 1,000 metres of track and a 540-degree spiral. A solar-powered lift pulls the toboggans uphill. One or two people can ride downhill without changing vehicles, and the speed can be controlled using a lever.
The high ropes course has five difficulty-level circuits, accessible from age six. The section reaching heights of up to twelve metres is intended for people aged 16 and over. The ropes course also features a continuous belay system. The age requirements clearly distinguish between the circuits and the higher section.
The pump track is divided into two skill levels. The outer loop has jumps and banked turns. The inner section has lower rollers and turns and is designed for children and beginners on scooters, skateboards or bikes. The two sections therefore differ not only in their design but also in their intended use.
The Kneipp facility is in the village centre, two minutes from Postplatz. Since opening in 1997, it has offered various water treatments. The facility includes arm baths, walking through water, water pours, foot massages on a barefoot path and a herb garden. The Lädeli at Postplatz serves as an information point for tourist services in Langenbruck.
