In Hemmiken, you can plan your stay around two very different interests: hikes connected with the ruins of Farnsburg Castle and the craftsmanship on historic buildings. The trail lengths offer a clear choice between a 4.4 km castle tour and an 11.1 km pass hike. In the village, a farmhouse and schoolhouse add stone carving to the hiking focus.

Hiking: Compare Time and Distance

The pass hike above the Ergolz Valley begins in Hemmiken and ends at Sissacher Fluh in Sissach. It is classified as moderate, is 11.1 km long and has a stated walking time of 3 hours and 30 minutes. On this route, the ruins of Farnsburg Castle are reached from Hemmiken after 1 hour and 30 minutes. This makes it possible to distinguish the time to the castle from the time for the full hike to Sissacher Fluh. Seasonal conditions can affect walking times; check current trail conditions before setting out.

Another option is the castle tour to the ruins of Farnsburg Castle, listed as 4.4 km with a walking time of 1 hour and 30 minutes. These figures describe a shorter total route than the pass hike; on that hike, too, the ruins are reached after 1 hour and 30 minutes. The difference between the time to a waypoint and the total route length helps you plan your hike without treating the two routes as the same.

Another suggested route is Hiking Tip 88, published in July 2021. It goes from Rothenfluh via Asp and Hemmiken to Ormalingen, and then via Maiberg and Mooshof. The route is described as approximately 7.9 km, with around 230 metres of ascent and 235 metres of descent, and a walking time of about 2½ hours. Check the trail markers on site before setting out.

Farnsburg Castle and Stone Carving

The ruins of Farnsburg Castle lie partly within the Hemmiken area and were built around 1330 by the Counts of Thierstein. In clear weather, the view from the ruins stretches as far as the Alps. The castle thus offers a tangible link to history and a viewpoint whose distant panorama depends on the weather.

Traces of local craftsmanship can also be seen on the buildings. The listed farmhouse at Ausserdorfstrasse 1 was rebuilt in 1815. Its lintel bears a cartouche with the year 1815 and the initials HICASP. The door frame and cartouche were made by a stonemason from Hemmiken and reflect the thriving tradition of folk stone carving at the time. Older houses also feature decorated door supports from the stoneworking of the 18th and 19th centuries.

The schoolhouse was built in 1825. Its numerous richly decorated window and door surrounds are made of Hemmiken reed sandstone; the main entrance also has a richly decorated lintel with a cornice supported by brackets. The grey-to-green stone was quarried in Steingraben, where a nature reserve has been designated. The farmhouse, schoolhouse and Steingraben thus connect individual architectural features with the history of local materials.

Location and Practical Information

Hemmiken lies north of Wischberg on the Hemmikerbach stream, in a side valley of the Ergolz Valley. The municipality belongs to the Sissach district in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. Hemmiken can be reached by postbus from Gelterkinden. Check the timetable for your travel date, as services and journey times may change.

Nearby, the Farnsburg estate lies just below the castle ruins and outside Ormalingen. It can be reached on foot with a short walk or by car. The estate runs its own farm butcher’s shop, where fresh meat specialities are sold directly from the farm. As opening arrangements may change, check before visiting.
