Pratteln brings together historical attractions and active leisure activities. Weiherschloss, the museum in the Bürgerhaus and the Salt Chamber exhibition each offer a different focus, while the wave pool, balance trail, mini golf and park round out the picture. When planning your stay, you can choose between culture and history or exercise and play as your main focus.

Local History and Exhibitions

Pratteln was first mentioned around 1102–1103 under the name Bratello. Weiherschloss was built around 1275 by the Lords of Eptingen. The entire village is also included in the Swiss Inventory of Heritage Sites. Its history therefore spans an early mention of its name, a medieval building and the classification of the village as a whole.

The museum in the Bürgerhaus in Pratteln takes visitors on a journey through 300,000 years of Pratteln’s history. Alongside individual historical landmarks, it also focuses on the town’s long development. The museum is about a 15-minute walk from Pratteln railway station and approximately 10 minutes from the “Pratteln Schlossstrasse” tram stop. These approximate journey times can help you plan your trip to the museum.

The Salt Chamber exhibition spans 15 rooms across two floors. Its subject matter ranges from the beginnings of salt extraction and trade to modern industrial salt processing; one of its highlights is a view into an exposed borehole. If you are interested in change over a long period, you will find a different focus here than at the museum dedicated to Pratteln’s history: the emphasis is on the extraction, trade and industrial processing of salt.

kulturPRATTELN holds exhibitions at Pratteln Castle several times a year. Dates may change, so check the current programme before your visit.

Exercise and Leisure

For active leisure, the aquabasilea leisure pool in Pratteln offers a wave pool, a toddlers’ pool, seven slides and two wild-water channels with a combined length of 824 metres. The hammam includes a cleansing and steam-bathing area as well as a relaxation area. Visitor facilities may change, so check the operator’s latest information before your visit.

The free public balance trail is in Erlihölzli, right next to the Vita-Parcours. The facility opened as a public amenity in 2025 and has 15 different balance stations. Details may also change, so bear this in mind when planning your visit.

Minigolf Ergolz provides balls and clubs for a round on site and is connected to a cycling and pedestrian path along the Ergolz. Information about the equipment provided may change, so check it before your visit. Jörin Park offers a different focus: its playground is located in a large, central public park in the middle of a residential area. When choosing between the options, you can use the path connection by the mini golf and the park setting of the playground as different points of reference.

Geographical Overview

Pratteln lies at an elevation of 298 m above sea level. The Rhine forms the northern boundary of the town and also marks the border between Germany and Switzerland; to the south, the Gempen plateau and Adlerberg form the boundary. These details add a brief geographical overview to the topics of culture and leisure.
