Arisdorf combines a landscape framed by wooded hills with a rich village history. Fields, meadows and village settlements shape the scenery, along with many cherry trees. Visitors planning a stay will find a range of attractions: village architecture, trails featuring stories and cherry blossoms, and hikes with clearly defined route details.

Arisdorf and Its Districts

Arisdorf lies at an elevation of about 345 m above sea level and is a municipality in the Liestal district of the canton of Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland. The municipal area includes the hamlet of Basel-Olsberg, also called Ländli. Ländli lies on the Violen stream. Its settlement pattern is associated with the neighbouring Aargau municipality of Olsberg, but it belongs to Arisdorf. This place name makes clear that the settlement pattern and municipal affiliation do not mean the same thing here.

Village History and Historic Buildings

Arisdorf was first mentioned in 1154. Its history is linked to the Frohburg, Thierstein and Bärenfels families, to Basel, and to the Basel Revolution of 1798. Several specific dates shape the chronology of its buildings: the city of Basel had Arisdorf’s Protestant Reformed church built in 1595 to replace a dilapidated chapel. Basel Cathedral Chapter bought the rectory at Hauptstrasse 66/66B in 1596 and converted it into a rectory; the building acquired its present appearance in 1684.

The former mill stands at the entrance to the village. Together with the surrounding agricultural buildings, it forms a small architectural group. The mill is already mentioned in the 16th century as having existed for a long time. The Heuschürli was probably built using older structural elements from the aforementioned chapel. Its large ventilation openings date it to the beginning of the 19th century; it is one of the canton’s most interesting examples of this type of small building. Bechhof stands on an elevated, scenic site on the mountain slope east of the village, above the church and the village.

Trails with Different Themes

The Arisdorf Story Trail passes eight stations. There, visitors can immerse themselves in stories by primary school pupils and admire creatively designed stations. The trail is suitable for pushchairs. This gives it a different focus from the Arisdorf Chirsiweg, also known as the Cherry Trail, which centres on cherry trees and their blossoms.

The Arisdorf Chirsiweg is a circular hike suitable for pushchairs in and around “Aschdef,” as Arisdorf is known. The cherry trees bloom with white blossoms there, especially in late March and early April. The two trails can therefore be distinguished by their focus: the Story Trail centres on stories and designed stations, while the Chirsiweg focuses on cherry trees and their seasonal blossoms.

Another option is the Hersberg–Arisdorf hiking route. It is specifically suitable for families with pushchairs and ends after 5.4 kilometres at the “Arisdorf, Olsbergerstrasse” stop. This distinguishes it from the circular hike: the route length and named endpoint provide a concrete framework for planning.

Cherry Trail, Distillery and Picnic Site

After returning to the village, the Arisdorf Chirsiweg recommends a visit to the Ernst Zuber AG specialist distillery. The distillery’s fruit is processed directly in its own fermentation tanks.

For time outdoors, the Vogelsand picnic site offers a barbecue hut, an outdoor grill and views of Arisdorf. This is a different kind of attraction from the themed trails: here, the focus is on the specified barbecue facilities and the view of the village.

Getting There and Planning

AAGL bus route 83 connects Arisdorf with Liestal, as well as with Augst and Pratteln. If you are planning to travel by bus, it is a good idea to check the timetable before your trip. Arisdorf is also near the Arisdorf motorway exit on the A2 and the Arisdorf Tunnel.

When choosing a base for your stay, you can weigh up the interests described here: cherry blossoms are especially notable in late March and early April, while the trails can be distinguished by their respective themes and route details. Architectural history and the locations of individual historic buildings provide further points of interest during your stay.
