Zwingen Castle lies on an island in the Birs. Opposite the castle and beside the inner wooden bridge stands St Oswald’s Chapel; the Mühlihüsli and the Old Mill tell more of the village’s history. The Kaltbrunnental Karst Nature Trail between Zwingen and Grellingen offers a different perspective. Zwingen is a village and a municipality in the Laufen district of the canton of Basel-Landschaft. This gives you a choice of different focuses for your stay: local history or a longer hike.

Castle Island and Historic Buildings

St Oswald’s Chapel stands in the south-eastern corner of the courtyard of Zwingen Castle, directly opposite the castle and beside the inner wooden bridge. In the Middle Ages, it was of particular importance in Zwingen. The chapel has been protected by the canton since 1993 and is also under federal protection. Its location makes the close architectural relationship between the castle and bridge immediately clear.

The wooden bridge at Zwingen Castle that survives today was not built until 1689. The MĂĽhlihĂĽsli is a semi-detached house that is thought to have developed from the former mill barn and is documented from 1766. The Old Mill bears witness to the historical importance of water-powered industry on the now-vanished MĂĽhlibach stream. These examples represent different aspects of local history: bridge building, housing and industry that harnessed water power.

Traces from Different Eras

Zwingen is documented from 14 March 1194 under its historical name, Zinwigen. At that time, Pope Celestine III confirmed the village as property of Beinwil Abbey. The Judenacker in Zwingen marks a different period: from 1573 to 1673, it served as a burial ground for Jews living in the Diocese of Basel. The dates provide two clearly distinct historical reference points—the medieval form of the name and a burial ground used for more than a century.

Plan a Castle Visit and Karst Nature Trail Hike

The grounds of Zwingen Castle can be visited on foot at any time. Some of the interior rooms are accessible as part of a pre-booked guided tour. If you would also like to see the rooms, arrange this type of tour separately. The Karst Nature Trail Association also offers guided tours led by specially trained trail guides.

The Kaltbrunnental Karst Nature Trail runs between Zwingen and Grellingen through a landscape of steep rock faces, clay caves and clear springs. The trail is about 9.5 kilometres long; the walk is listed as taking 2.5 to 3 hours on foot. Take the Regio-S-Bahn to Zwingen; you can return by Regio-S-Bahn from Grellingen. Check the timetable before setting off so you can plan your outward and return journeys accordingly.

Two other routes offer different connections to the castle: the Zwingen–Blauen–Blattepass–Klus–Aesch hike passes by it, while ViaSurprise Stage 4 follows the Birs to Zwingen and its moated castle. To choose between them, consider whether you want the castle to be on the route or the path to follow the Birs to Zwingen.
