Bettingen is one of the two rural municipalities in the Canton of Basel-Stadt and borders Germany. The hiking trail network passes through forests and along fields to the Chrischonagrat; the options range from short walks to full-day hikes. Nature, views, village history and attractions on St. Chrischona offer a variety of highlights for a stay.

Hiking Trails, Nature and Freeride

The marked cantonal hiking trails lead to the Chrischonagrat and its viewpoints. They are suitable for both short walks and full-day hikes to Germany or Riehen. The easy-to-follow Butterfly Trail offers a different way to discover nature along the route: information boards on this circular trail explain local butterfly species, their habitats and important food plants.

For mountain bikers, an official freeride trail starts at the foot of the television tower. It runs through the forest toward Bettingen and includes jumps, berms and challenging sections. The options are clearly distinct: the Butterfly Trail focuses on nature, while the freeride trail offers a sporting challenge.

Views and History on St. Chrischona

The viewing platform on the tower of St. Chrischona Church is the highest publicly accessible point in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. From there, a 360-degree panorama opens up over the trinational Basel region. The site also has a long history: the church was built in 1340 and became popular as a place of pilgrimage in the 15th century. On March 8, 1840, Christian Friedrich Spittler founded the St. Chrischona Theological Seminary in the church, which had fallen into disrepair at the time.

Bettingen’s historic village center is listed in the Swiss Federal Inventory of Heritage Sites of National Importance as a site of national importance. Historic buildings are well preserved around Lindenplatz and along the upper village street. On the Chrischonagrat, boundary stone no. 100 stands directly on the national border with Germany; it is a destination for hikes and walks with a geographical and historical focus.

Activities and Discovery Trail

The publicly accessible grounds of the St. Chrischona conference center offer a large adventure playground, an Inspiration Trail, and indoor and outdoor sports facilities. The Inspiration Trail has six stations with audio and visual content accessible via QR code, and passes listed historic buildings. Groups can rent the sports facilities for events and tournaments.

The meeting area on the Generations Trail has activity equipment and seating for children and parents; there is a zip line in the adjacent forest. A horizontal bouldering block is three meters long and offers three designated bouldering routes of varying difficulty. Since 2025, boules courts have been available for public use at Restaurant Baslerhof and on the Generations Trail. As rules for use may change, it is advisable to check shortly before your visit.

Village Life, Local Products and the Seasons

The farm shop at Brohegasse 9 sells agricultural produce directly to customers, including seasonal products grown on the farm and sourced from the region. Every two years, the farm at the same address hosts the Bettingen Autumn Festival, offering a glimpse into local traditions and agriculture. The lantern parade on St. Chrischona is co-organized every November by the Riehen-Bettingen parish and is aimed primarily at families. The Christmas market on Chrischona Berg lasts two days; at Eben-Ezer-Halle, visitors can enjoy handmade gifts, food and drink, contemplative music and a children’s program. If you are planning your trip around an event, check the specific date.

For the warmer months, there is the seasonal Bettingen open-air swimming pool, with a multipurpose pool and a children’s paddling pool. Opening dates vary. Depending on when you visit, you can combine Bettingen with hikes, nature and cultural attractions, or a seasonal visit to the open-air pool.
