A botanical garden, contemporary art and visible medieval wall remains offer different perspectives on Münchenstein. The political municipality lies in the Arlesheim district of the canton of Basel-Landschaft in Switzerland and extends on both sides of the Birs. The municipality’s area consists of 56 percent built-up land, 24 percent forest and 17 percent agricultural land. The riverside landscape and varied land uses are therefore part of the area’s geographical setting.

Merian Gardens and the Brüglinger Ebene

Merian Gardens are located in the Brüglinger Ebene and comprise an 18-hectare botanical garden. They include a historic English garden and nature conservation areas: landscaped garden areas and protected land together shape the character of the grounds. Many paths in Merian Gardens are wheelchair accessible; check the specific accessibility information before your trip.

The market stall at Merian Gardens sells vegetables of rare varieties, sun-ripened fruit, eggs, honey and seasonal specialities. Availability may vary by season. If particular products are important to your visit, check in advance what is currently on offer.

The Brüglinger Ebene also has a historic connection to garden and landscape design: in 1980, Münchenstein was the host municipality for the second Swiss Horticultural and Landscape Gardening Exhibition, “Grün 80”. This date distinguishes the earlier event from the current offerings at Merian Gardens.

Contemporary Art and Programmes

Schaulager was founded in 2003 with the aim of combining the storage and display of contemporary art. The permanent installations in the collection of the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation are stored there and are publicly visible during Schaulager exhibitions. Their visibility is therefore tied to the exhibition programme. Schaulager offers public tours in German and English every month; check the current tour date before your trip.

Kunsthaus Baselland presents regional, national and international contemporary art in a repurposed factory building. It offers artists a platform of more than 1,400 square metres for solo, group and thematic exhibitions. Kunsthaus is wheelchair accessible; access is via a ramp by the entrance on Helsinki-Strasse. Check the accessibility information before your visit.

HEK offers participatory programmes on art, media and technology for children, young people and adults. As the programmes may change, it is advisable to check the current offering before your trip. For culture and sport, Kuspo Bruckfeld is a multipurpose hall with facilities for various events; planning depends on the event in question.

Traces of Local History

Münchenstein Castle was probably founded around 1270. The noble Münch family later took the name von Münchenstein, giving the village its name. Visible castle wall remains still stand above the old village centre. For safety reasons, the Münchenstein ruins are cordoned off with a gate and can be reached by public transport or car. Observe the barrier and check access information before your visit.

Another historic building is the Trotte: it was built at the foot of the castle rock in 1470 and extended in the mid-16th century. These dates highlight different aspects of local history: the castle complex is believed to date from around 1270, while the Trotte is associated with the year 1470 and its later extension.

Places to Visit and Finding Hotels

The timing also varies: market offerings may change by season, public tours take place monthly, Schaulager installations are visible during its exhibitions, and HEK programmes may change. Plan your visit around the relevant dates and offerings; this makes it easier to match your accommodation search to your interests during your stay.
