Zurzach was created on 1 January 2022 through the merger of the former municipalities of Bad Zurzach, Baldingen, Böbikon, Kaiserstuhl, Rekingen, Rietheim, Rümikon and Wislikofen. The present-day municipality name thus encompasses several former place names. Verenamünster, the Zurzach thermal baths and the Papa Moll Trail are specifically associated with Bad Zurzach.

Rhine landscapes and trails

The ViaRhenana starts in Bad Zurzach and passes through landscapes shaped by water along the Untersee and the High Rhine. In some sections, it follows the Rhine and offers views of the Rhine Valley. This gives travellers a specific starting point in Bad Zurzach and a broader landscape setting that extends beyond the town. Those wishing to include trails and river scenery in their stay, alongside local history, will find a distinct focus here.

The Zurzibiet can also be explored on a culinary tour that leads from farm to farm, combining fine products, friendly encounters and idyllic trails. Unlike a single building or a museum collection, the route between the farms provides the framework here. The tour thus adds a rural touch to the cultural offerings in Bad Zurzach.

Old Town, Verenamünster and Barzmühle

The historic centre of Bad Zurzach stretches from the village centre, known as the “Flecken”, down to the Rhine. Verenamünster houses art treasures and a Gothic crypt, and is associated with a centuries-old pilgrimage tradition. Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architectural elements stand side by side here, so the architecture cannot be reduced to a single period. Guided tours of Verenamünster include a visit to the church treasury and the Verena crypt. Check whether these tours are available before your trip. In the Old Town, guided tours follow routes along the streets, behind façades and through hidden corners.

On the Rhine stands another historic landmark, the Barzmühle: it is the last functioning grain mill, and its history dates back to 1452. Visitors can thus explore topics ranging from the town centre and ecclesiastical architecture to a historic mill in operation.

Regional history at the Höfli District Museum

The Höfli District Museum presents the history of the Zurzibiet. It displays prehistoric and early historical finds from the district, particularly from the Roman settlement of Tenedo. Other topics include the cult of Saint Verena, the Zurzach fairs and castles, and the history of the corset. The focus thus shifts from an individual town to the history of the region. Those interested in this broader perspective will find a different approach at the museum than in the architecture of Verenamünster.

Thermal baths and the Papa Moll Trail

The Zurzach thermal baths have thermal-water and natural swimming pools. Their Bohrturm sauna area includes several saunas, steam baths and relaxation areas. Swimming and sauna bathing therefore offer different ways to enjoy your stay. Another activity in Bad Zurzach is the Papa Moll Trail, a scavenger hunt with 15 riddles. The start and finish are at Bad Zurzach Tourismus AG, next to the Zurzach thermal baths.
