On the eastern shore of Lake Hallwil, Meisterschwanden brings together lakeside trails, water sports and culture amid the Seetal landscape. When planning your stay, it is worth considering the different options: you can set aside time by the lake, choose hikes of varying lengths or discover historic places in the village.

Meisterschwanden and Tennwil in the Seetal

Meisterschwanden is in the canton of Aargau, in the Lenzburg district. The two village centres of Meisterschwanden and Tennwil are shaped by Lake Hallwil, Lindenberg and the wider Seetal landscape. Tennwil was incorporated into Meisterschwanden in 1900. The town’s transformation is also part of its history: until the second half of the 19th century, Meisterschwanden was predominantly agricultural; industrialisation followed, with cotton weaving and straw plaiting.

Getting to the lake and bathing areas

Meisterschwanden is served by two bus routes: route 390 connects the town directly with Lenzburg, while route 340 goes to Wohlen. To reach the Seerose lido, take the bus to Meisterschwanden Oberdorf, then follow a footpath of about 900 metres. Alternatively, the Lake Hallwil shipping service goes to the Seerose landing stage. It operates daily in all weather. From Monday to Saturday, there are the Seengen and Mosen routes; on Sundays, the full lake cruise is also available. Check the current bus connections and boat timetable before travelling.

The Seerose lido has a large sunbathing lawn, a children’s playground and a diving tower. The facilities described at Arbeiterstrandbad Tennwil include a tree-lined sunbathing lawn, a wooden sun deck, a playground and a two-metre diving tower; there are also a raft, a barbecue area, table tennis, a volleyball court and boat rentals for bathers. As some facilities may change, check the latest information before your visit.

Water activities and trails

In Tennwil, the Swiss Sailing School offers taster and beginner courses in sailing and motorboating at its water sports station by the lido and campsite. Brunner Hallwilersee AG rents out pedal boats, rowing boats and motorboats at a location between Hotel Seerose and the lido in Meisterschwanden. Course and rental options may change, so check what is currently available in advance. The municipality lists stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Hallwil as a nature experience, fitness training or guided tour. On guided discovery tours and excursions, the Lake Hallwil Rangers share their knowledge of the landscape, wildlife and plant life, as well as the rules that apply around the lake.

For a hike that takes less time, the Delphin–Flurenwald–Seengen circular route goes through Tennwil and back to Delphin: it is just under eight kilometres long and takes about two hours. A longer option starts at Seehotel Delphin and goes via Fahrwangen and Bettwil to Aesch LU. This hike is around eleven kilometres long and takes about three hours. The distance and duration details make it easier to choose between the two routes for your day’s plans. For a longer cycling trip, the 65-kilometre Seetal Castles Tour starts and ends in Meisterschwanden. It goes via Lenzburg, Suhr, Unterkulm, Reinach and Beromünster, as well as Gelfingen and Aesch on the way back. The Lake Hallwil lakeshore path is another option that goes around the lake: it passes through largely undeveloped lakeside landscapes and features highlights such as Hallwyl Castle and a pile-dwelling house, as well as opportunities for swimming breaks.

Church, archaeological site and local traditions

The Reformed Church of Meisterschwanden, designed by Jost Kopp, was inaugurated in spring 1822. Its floor plan is octagonal on the outside and longitudinally oval on the inside; it is considered a typical transverse church. The church has been protected as a cantonal monument since 1960 and, following renovations in the late 1970s, also as a federal monument. The Seerose pile-dwelling site offers a different historical perspective: it is recognised and protected as an associated site of the UNESCO World Heritage property. The settlement dates from between 3900 and 2400 BC.

Meitlisonntag is celebrated in Meisterschwanden each year around the second Sunday in January. According to oral tradition, the custom is said to date back to the successful intervention of the women of the Seetal during the Second Villmergen War in 1712. The Meisterschwanden Military Collection covers the military, equipment and related Swiss history. It is open on Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm; group tours can be arranged at any time by prior agreement. Check the visitor information before setting off.

The Hallwil Lake Run also has a specific sporting connection to the town: in the two-person team run, two runners split the 21.1-kilometre route around Lake Hallwil into two sections. The relay exchange takes place in Meisterschwanden, by Hotel Delphin. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the dates and details for the relevant edition.
