A Biedermeier villa of regional importance, a network of trails along the Wyna and a historic sawmill offer visitors different ways to explore Menziken. Villa Zur Eintracht is fully protected at cantonal level. Other points of interest include a Reformed church with original features from the time it was built, and activities that combine cultural history with time outdoors.

Menziken and the Wynental Valley

Menziken lies in the upper Wynental Valley and borders the canton of Lucerne. The municipality covers 176 hectares of forest; this figure may change as land cover changes. Elevations range from 535 metres at the Wyna to the summit of Stierenberg at 872 metres. These two reference points illustrate the marked difference in elevation within the municipality.

The landscape also bears traces of its formation: prominent moraine ridges along Stierenberg, Sonnenberg and Homberg extend towards Gontenschwil-Zetzwil. They bear witness to the Reuss Glacier’s maximum advance during the last glaciation, around 24,000 years ago. Those interested in the landscape will find not only the hills of today, but also a tangible reminder of the area’s glacial past.

Local History and Culture

The place name was first recorded in writing in 1045 in the form “Manzinchoven”, in a deed issued by Count Ulrich of Lenzburg. Menziken belonged to Reinach for a long time and became an independent municipality around 1580. These dates mark two distinct points in the area’s history: its earliest written record and its later political independence.

An early industrial tradition is part of Menziken’s economic history. Cotton manufacturing was followed by weaving mills, spinning mills and dye works. From 1838 onwards, home-based textile work was gradually displaced by the tobacco industry, whose products included pipe tobacco. A richly illustrated book presents Urs Merz’s tobacco and cigar collection and provides an overview of the history of tobacco and the tobacco industry in the Wynen and Seetal valleys, as well as of the region’s major tobacco-processing businesses.

Villa Zur Eintracht is a Biedermeier villa of regional importance and is fully protected at cantonal level. The Reformed Church of Menziken retains neo-Gothic stained glass, a pulpit, an organ case and a baptismal font dating from the time it was built. The church was completed in 1890. Those interested in architectural history can explore two distinct examples: a protected villa and the preserved interior of a church dating from the late 19th century.

Trails, Pump Track and Sawmill

The Wyna Trail connects Menziken, Gunzwil and BeromĂĽnster. The marked routes are between 2 and 10 kilometres long and run parallel to the Wyna stream. This range gives you a clear guide when choosing a route by length, without assuming a specific walking time.

The pump track has its own opening hours: Pumptrack Menziken is open daily from 08:00 to 21:00; from November to February, it closes at 18:00. As these opening hours are subject to change, it is advisable to check them before your visit.

The Sagi Menziken sawmill is a cultural and historical attraction. It was built by Jakob Merz in 1801, restored from 1982 to 1986 and is a listed monument. Public sawmill demonstrations take place on the first Saturday of each month from April to October, between 09:00 and 11:00. Confirm the date and time before your visit.

Badi Menziken has two modern saunas and steam baths. If you plan to use these facilities, check the current access arrangements before your visit, as details and access may change.
