Künten lies in the Baden district in the Reuss Valley, between Baden and Bremgarten. The municipality combines a varied riverside landscape along the Reuss with woodland, opportunities for nature watching and traces of local history. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Künten, you can think of the destination in terms of two themes: nature around the Reuss and forests, or the history of the church, mill and earlier settlement.
Reuss riverbanks and natural landscape
The Reuss riverside area in Künten is a varied and attractive local recreation area. A particular natural highlight is the “Alte Reuss” in the border area between Eggenwil and Künten-Sulz. The nature reserve is protected as a floodplain of national importance and as an amphibian spawning site of national importance. The Alte Reuss also offers the opportunity to observe rare animal species.
Exploring the outdoors
The Talhau, Hau and Brandholz woodland areas offer opportunities for walking, mountain biking and jogging. This sets them apart from seasonal swimming in the Reuss: the forests are ideal for exercise, while the river is a popular swimming destination in summer. Check local water conditions before swimming.
Church and mill: different points in time
The Heiligkreuz Künten parish was established as an independent parish in 1901. Bishop Franziskus von Streng solemnly consecrated today’s Church of the Holy Cross on 30 May 1965. The two dates mark different milestones: the establishment of the parish in 1901 and the consecration of today’s church in 1965. The mill at Mühlegasse 2 is a monument of national importance under full protection. Its basic structure probably dates back to the 17th century; the mill contains a largely preserved mechanism from the 19th century. The church’s consecration date is precisely recorded, while the dating of the mill’s basic structure remains explicitly uncertain. The church represents a religious focus in local history, while the mill represents a technological one.
Earlier settlement traces
A burial mound on Lebern near Sulz is considered evidence of much earlier settlement. Remains of a Roman settlement have been found in Künten and Sulz, including coins, pottery fragments, and bronze and iron tools. In the Middle Ages, the municipality was within the Habsburg sphere of rule; most of the lower court jurisdiction lay with Hermetschwil Abbey. These power structures complement the architectural history with the medieval political order. The place names Sulzo and Chünten are first mentioned around 1160 in the “Acta Murensis.” This first mention dates the names, not the older archaeological traces. Taken together, the information spans archaeological settlement traces, medieval rule and place names, and later building and church dates.
