Küttigen lies north of Aarau in a side valley of the Aare and belongs to the Aarau district in the canton of Aargau. The village centre is situated in a shallow hollow in front of the southern slope of the Jura. Its largely unspoilt landscape is characterised by diverse flora and fauna. Jura trails, historic sites and carrot traditions offer different ways to shape a stay here.

Jura Trails: Geology, Meadows and a Castle

The Küttigen–Staffelegg Geo-Hiking Trail has five stations on the formation of the Folded Jura and its most important rock formations. The Schellenbrücke is also part of the trail. It is considered the last known example in Aargau from the era of chain punishment. The trail thus brings together geological themes and a distinctive piece of regional history.

For a hike with specific details, try the “Küttiger Wiesenvielfalt” Flower Walk. It is five kilometres long, with 138 metres of ascent and 226 metres of descent, and takes around one hour and 27 minutes. The route uses the Flower Walks app to guide you through the plant life of the Küttigen meadows. It starts at the Küttigen, Benken-Klus bus stop and ends at Küttigen, Aabach. Check app availability and current trail conditions in advance.

Another outing is the approach to Königstein Castle ruins: from the village, a narrow, unmarked path leads across a meadow and through the forest; the walk is listed as taking about 30 minutes. The two time estimates refer to different things: the duration of the entire Flower Walk and the approach to the ruins. Take particular care with local trail conditions on the unmarked path.

Castles, Church and Historic Houses

Königstein Castle was built by the Kienberg family in 1278. From there, they extended their rule over Küttigen and Erlinsbach to form a bailiwick. The castle stood above the Benken gorge on the Egg ridge; only a few remains survive today.

The church stands on Kirchberg Hill. Its main structural fabric was built between 1462 and 1472 in the Late Gothic style. It has been a listed monument since 1947. Eight windows in the choir and nave were completed for the consecration on 3 March 1957; they were created by Aarau artist Felix Hoffmann.

Küttigen’s historic houses can be visited freely year-round and are accessible with a pushchair or wheelchair. A signposted path passes the historically significant houses; information panels outside the buildings provide an overview of their history. Those who would like to find out more can book a guided tour with Jurapark Aargau or directly with local historian Kurt Graf. Confirm current booking options in advance.

Carrot Traditions and Vineyards

The Küttiger carrot is an old ProSpecieRara variety: it has a distinctive shape, is white and has been grown in Küttigen for more than 100 years. Since 2020, the Küttigen rural women’s association has held its own carrot market, featuring additional local products. It takes place each year before the Aarau carrot market; check the specific market dates for your visit.

At the carrot field, the rural women share their knowledge of the distinctive Küttiger carrot on a tour lasting about an hour. Registration is required; confirm availability before booking. The vineyard is also part of the local landscape: it lies on the sunny southern side of Achenberg and is planted mainly with Pinot Noir and Riesling x Sylvaner vines. Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Tannat and Malbec also grow there.

Swimming Pool and Getting There

Küttigen swimming pool has a 50-metre pool, a children’s pool, a slide and diving boards. The facilities also include a sunbathing lawn with a playground and a restaurant with a kiosk. The pool is supplied with water from a nearby spring. Most of the pool complex is wheelchair-accessible; the pool restaurant, toilets and pool access are easy to reach. Check this accessibility information again before your visit.

The Aarau–Küttigen–Staffelegg–Frick–Laufenburg PostBus route serves Küttigen. Check the current timetable when planning your journey and travel to the Flower Walk stops.
