Immediately north of Timmele kyrka, the Timmele hålvägar lie in a scenic area by the Ätran. The holloways can be explored on foot and are just one part of the area’s cultural profile: a neighboring burial ground, a chalice from 1383 that is still in use, a village model and a collection of motorized vehicles each offer a different perspective. You can therefore get to know Timmele through its landscape, sacred heritage, historic building styles or technology.
Holloways and a burial ground by the Ätran
Four parallel holloways make up the Timmele hålvägar. They are up to 180 meters long, 10 meters wide and 4.5 meters deep. Together, their length, width and depth give a concrete impression of the site; their parallel arrangement shows them as a group of routes rather than a single track. You can walk along the holloways. They were once connected to an old ford across the Ätran, which forms part of the history of these routes.
Directly beside the Timmele hålvägar is a burial ground with 45 burial mounds and 15 circular stone settings. The numbers identify two different types of graves and give a concrete sense of the size of the site. Those interested in the archaeological traces can view the holloways and burial ground as neighboring but distinct features of the area.
A church treasure and a village model
Timmele kyrka houses a communion chalice dating from 1383, which is still in use. It is believed to be the oldest chalice in Sweden still in use. The combination of a clearly dated object and its continued use gives the church treasure a distinctive perspective on time; its status as the oldest in the country is explicitly a matter of belief.
Timmele Miniby depicts the church village at a scale of 1:10. It shows what the houses and buildings in the area may have looked like around the late 19th century. Rather than focusing on a single building, the model presents the church village as a whole. Timmele Miniby is outdoors—a different way of presenting the past from the individual chalice inside the church.
A look at motorized technology
UlricehamnsBygdens MotorMuseum focuses on something different. It displays cars, motorcycles, mopeds and other motorized objects from eight decades. The range of object types sets this collection apart from the village model and the individual church treasure; here, the focus is on the history of motorized objects. The museum offered opening hours on certain weekends and by prior arrangement. Check before visiting whether this option is available on your preferred date.
Timmele’s themes differ both in their subject matter and in their perspective: the holloways and neighboring burial ground relate to the landscape and archaeology. The chalice is a single object that is still in use; the Miniby presents a possible historic view of the village in model form, while the MotorMuseum displays different types of vehicles from eight decades. These differences can help you choose the focus of your stay: landscape, sacred heritage, the village setting or technology.
