Tjörn brings together a range of travel interests: hiking trails through varied landscapes, prehistoric traces and contemporary art. Tjörn comprises 1,546 islands and skerries, some of which are inhabited. Dyrön, Åstol, Härön and Tjörnekalv are connected by regular ferry services. If you are planning a ferry trip, it is worth checking the timetable for your chosen route.

Hiking on Tjörn and the Islands

Dyrön has two hiking trails of different lengths and routes: the yellow circular trail is about five kilometres long, while the blue trail over the hills is 1.6 kilometres. Mouflons also roam freely on the island. On Härön, some hiking trails pass through a nature reserve, where several alternative routes are available.

Säbyleden is a circular trail starting at Säbygården. It passes through open countryside, pastureland and woodland before reaching the old stone hut on Säby ö. The trails at Sundsby offer views over Stigfjord and lead through a beech forest, as well as narrow passages and caves. Sundsby säteri park, its hiking trails and grounds are open year-round.

Viewpoints and local trails also offer their own highlights: Vetteberget is Tjörn’s highest mountain, with views west across the sea to the horizon. Skärhamnsvandringen includes the maritime museum and continues to Hamneberget, which offers panoramic views over Skärhamn. You can choose between an island hike, trails through nature reserves and a route with views over a town.

Archaeology, Art and History

Pilane combines traces of Stone Age settlements and Iron Age graves with contemporary art. This eight-hectare natural and cultural landscape encompasses mountains, deep valleys and archaeological remains dating back thousands of years. Iron Age traces include around 90 stone circles, standing stones and other stone arrangements. Here, landscape, early settlement and art are intertwined.

The Nordic Watercolour Museum presents several exhibitions each year featuring artists from around the world. Beginners can try out watercolour techniques in the open studio. The maritime museum in Skärhamn offers another way to explore local history: in Cherlinska huset, it presents memories and documentation of Tjörn’s maritime history through pictures, models, objects and documents.

Klädesholmen Museum Sillebua is dedicated to the history and development of Klädesholmen, particularly fish and herring processing from around 1860 to 1960. On Åstol, the local heritage museum Gröna Boden documents the history of the fishing village. Guided tours about Elin Sundberg, the daughter of a gold prospector, are offered at Villa Solfrid in Klövedal. Sundsby säteri also has a specific historical connection: Margareta Huitfeldt and the Danish nobleman Thomas Dyre arrived there in 1635. Pater Noster Lighthouse is 32 metres tall, was designed by Nils Gustav von Heidenstam and was designated a state-listed building in 2015.

Cycling, Paddling and a Swim

Tjörn has many car-free cycle paths and cycling routes to attractions and cafés. The surfaces are mostly asphalt and fine gravel; bicycles can be rented at several locations. If you would rather get out on the water, Kajaktiv Tjörn in Bleket offers kayak hire, guided paddling trips and kayaking courses. The “Paddla från Kajaktiv Tjörn” route is suitable for beginners and experienced paddlers; beginners should paddle it in fine weather.

Blekets badplats in the southwest of Tjörn has a small sandy beach, rocks, a bathing jetty, a diving tower, a swimming platform and a toilet. For a meal or fika break, Margaretas kök och skafferi serves food in a historic manor-house setting. The farm shop sells freshly baked bread, rolls and other locally produced delicacies.
