Across eight hectares, Pilane brings together rocks and valleys, millennia-old historical remains and contemporary artworks. The Säbyleden also offers different perspectives on the landscape: you can choose between two route lengths and pass forests, grazing land and other natural features. Cultural and historical insights round out these discoveries—from a rock carving to Villa Solfrid.
Pilane: landscape, art and guided tours
The natural and cultural landscape of Pilane is shaped by rocks and valleys. Contemporary artworks stand among millennia-old historical remains. If you would like to get to know the area on a guided tour, allow about 90 minutes: tours must be booked in advance. The café at the entrance serves pastries, coffee, other drinks and ice cream. So, alongside the walk, you can also take a break and enjoy a small selection of refreshments.
Säbyleden: four or six kilometres
The Säbyleden is a circular hiking trail that starts at Säbygården and passes through open landscapes, grazing land and forest. The longer option covers six kilometres to the old stone hut and back. The shorter loop is four kilometres and skips the detour to the hut. This makes it easy to choose based on the route length and whether you want to include the hut in your walk.
Along the way, deciduous forest, wet meadows, seashore, scrubland and grassland alternate. The trail markers are a subtle orange and may change due to maintenance work; check the route before setting off. Säbygården, the starting point of the trail, is a large farm dating from the early 19th century and one of the best-preserved buildings of its kind in Bohuslän. The circular trail thus combines clearly described route options with a historic building at the starting point.
Björshuvudet and Stigfjorden
The Björshuvudet Nature Reserve covers areas in Björshuvudet, Halsbäck, Klövedal, Önneröd, Kolleröd, Vik and Toröd. From its rocky heights, you can look out over the archipelago landscape of Stigfjorden. The reserve includes deciduous forests, grazing land, coastal meadows and nutrient-rich fens; to the north, it borders the salt water of Stigfjorden. This combination of elevated viewpoints, open spaces and diverse habitats shapes the landscape.
A cycle path also runs through Säby, connecting Brevik with the Pilane burial ground.
Villa Solfrid and local history
Guided tours of Villa Solfrid are offered in Klövedal. You can learn about the story of gold prospector’s daughter Elin Sundberg; check whether tours are available before your visit. At the age of 36, Sundberg had the castle-like stone house built on a barren stretch of moorland near her parents’ farm, Rusmut, in Västra Sunna on Tjörn.
More cultural history can be found in the rock carving in Klövedal: it depicts 13 ships and about ten cup marks. The varied motifs and approximate number of cup marks make this archaeological detail tangible. In Klövedals kyrka, the bridal crown is made of gilded silver; a church service is held there every Sunday.
A different landscape by the water
Ängevikens badplats has a sandy beach, a grassy area and a jetty running along the rocks. The bathing area thus adds a place with distinctive features by the water to the forests, grazing land and rocky landscapes. When choosing where to stay in Klövedal, you can weigh up different options: a guided exploration of Pilane, one of two route lengths on the Säbyleden, or cultural and landscape highlights at other locations.
