Klädesholmen consists of two holms: the southern holm is Klädesholmen and has the oldest buildings; the northern one is called Koholmen. This division provides a concrete framework for the place. Distinctive themes for a stay include herring processing, Klädesholmen Church and seabird watching at Västra hamnen.

Herring History and Tastings

The production of canned herring on Klädesholmen began in the 1920s. The Sillebua Museum presents Klädesholmen’s history and development, focusing on fish and herring processing from around 1860 to 1960. The two time references highlight different things: the 1920s mark the start of canning production, while Sillebua looks at a longer period in the history of processing. This makes it possible to explore the local history of herring both through a specific turning point and through its development over a longer period.

House of Herrings is a distinct visitor destination dedicated to herring in the centre of Klädesholmen, offering tasting experiences and tastings. At Sillens Hus, tastings can be arranged for groups of around 40 people, with advance booking. The offering includes four kinds of herring with sour cream and onions, served with bread and a drink; a short presentation on the history of herring introduces the tasting.

Guided tours at Sillens Hus can be booked in advance for groups of ten or more; they can also be held in English. The tasting and the guided tour offer different ways to explore the subject: one through the food and accompanying presentation, the other through a guided tour.

Church and Local Tradition

Klädesholmen Church was built in 1793 on a new church site; its interior was completed in 1797. The exterior has the character of a late 18th-century wooden church and has remained essentially unchanged since it was built; only minor alterations have been made. The dates mark two stages in the building’s history: its construction and the subsequent completion of the interior.

Samhällets dag has been celebrated since 1972 on the first Saturday in July, with numerous activities and a communal herring meal. Alongside the long history of herring processing, this recurring community event is part of the local annual calendar. For travel planning, the fixed date provides a specific July connection; the activities and communal meal give the day its special character.

Seabirds, Sauna and Getting There

The far end of Västra hamnen is the best place to watch seabirds. When westerly winds freshen in autumn and winter, you can see northern gannets, various auks and gulls there. This seasonal window differs from Samhällets dag: the community day falls on the first Saturday in July, while the seabird watching mentioned here is associated with autumn and winter and freshening westerly winds.

Klädesholmen’s sauna has been adapted for accessibility. Klädesholmen can be reached by car or bus; berths in the guest harbour can be booked through Dockspot. These are practical points to consider when choosing how to travel and for stays where a berth in the guest harbour is relevant.
