Bastevik bathing area lies at the southern end of Lake Hällungen. The water is a natural focal point for a stay in Ucklum; the present-day church, a historic courthouse site, a mill and a local heritage museum also shape the character of the place. Nearby, there is also an old cemetery that can be walked around and information boards at Gårdsjön. You can therefore plan your visit to Ucklum around different interests: water, architectural and local history, or nature information.
Bastevik bathing area and Lake Hällungen
Bastevik bathing area is in the southern part of Lake Hällungen in Ucklum. A parking area on a gravel surface is located ten metres from the bathing spot. The “Cykla Hällungen runt” cycling route also continues towards Bastevik, where you can swim in Lake Hällungen. If you plan to take the route, check the latest route details before setting off, as information may change. This gives you two different ways to plan your stay: a specific place to swim and a route that passes towards the bathing area.
The church and the village
Ucklum is on Route 650, the former E6. The present-day Ucklums kyrka stands in the village, just west of this road, which runs through Ucklum. The present church building was built in 1859. This connects the church to a precise location and a construction date that specifically refers to the present building. The road helps locate the church within the village, while the construction date provides a point of reference in the building’s history.
The courthouse site and mill history
In the parish of Ucklum, Smedseröd’s courthouse site and inn are located on the old main road through Bohuslän. The present Smedseröd courthouse was built in 1876. Together with the construction date of the present Ucklums kyrka, 1859, this gives two distinct historical points in time. The locations also differ: the church is in the village of Ucklum, while the courthouse site and inn are in the parish, on the old main road.
Sköllunga kvarn is a historic mill and valuable cultural heritage. The Kvarn- och veteranmoppedag is a traditional event held at the mill. Both the mill building and an event tradition are therefore among the local cultural themes, offering a distinct focus alongside the church and courthouse site.
The museum and nearby places
Ucklums Hembygdsmuseum displays furnishings and materials from the first grade of Ucklum School, agricultural equipment and household items, as well as a mill with a waterwheel. The collection spans school equipment, agriculture, household life and the subject of mills. These varied exhibits offer several ways to explore Ucklum’s everyday and material culture, rather than focusing on just one historical topic.
The old cemetery at Grössby–Prästegärde lies northeast of the centre of Ucklum. You can walk around it, and there is an information board beside the car park. Nearby, information boards along the paths at Gårdsjön describe the research carried out there, as well as the plants and animals in the area. While the church, courthouse site and mill focus mainly on architectural and local history, Gårdsjön is centred on research and nature information.
