Svenshögen lies between Lilla and Stora Hällungen on a western slope in the Bratteforsån valley. The Svenshögen bathing area is in the northern part of Lake Hällungen. When planning a visit, you can consider the landscape, trails and culture as different focal points: for a hike, the season and possible starting point matter; for a visit to STATIONEN, check the programme.

On foot and by bike

A hike along the Bratteforsån can start at the commuter car park beside Svenshögen railway station. It is possible year-round; summer is particularly suited to a jungle-like experience. If that is the impression you are looking for, summer is a good time to go. The hike itself, however, is not limited to summer. Conditions along the route can vary.

The “Cykla Hällungen runt” bike tour passes through Svenshögen but is not marked. This raises different planning considerations: for the hike, the possible starting point and season may matter; for the bike tour, take the lack of markings into account when navigating.

Bathing area, rules and paddling

The Svenshögen bathing area is in the northern part of Lake Hällungen. On Stora Hällungen, motorboats with more than 6 hp (4.4 kW) and personal watercraft are prohibited. The stated power limit applies to motorboats; personal watercraft are also explicitly prohibited.

Anyone wishing to paddle on Stora Hällungen is welcome at Svenshögens Sportklubb. The offer began in late summer 2025; confirm your participation with the club. Club kayaks are restricted to club activities and training.

History and contemporary culture

Svenshögen Sanatorium opened in 1911 and was used as a hospital for tuberculosis patients until the 1940s. The sanatorium therefore has a clear historical significance: its history includes both the year it opened and its former use as a hospital.

STATIONEN i Svenshögen is a non-profit association. Since 2019, it has produced, organised and presented contemporary art and culture in the renovated railway station building. Opening hours depend on the programme, so plan your visit around what is on. The history of the sanatorium and contemporary culture offer different perspectives if you want to get to know Svenshögen beyond its nature and trails.

Getting there and choosing accommodation

Svenshögen has good commuter train connections. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your specific travel date. This lets you factor the connection into your day’s plans without assuming fixed departure times.

When choosing accommodation, it is worth considering two questions separately: Does the train connection suit your planned travel date, and is the specific location of the accommodation convenient for the visits that matter to you? If you are considering staying overnight in Svenshögen, compare the location of each accommodation with your own plans.
