Stenungsund combines nature trails in the centre with historic sites, culture and excursions in the surrounding area. Kvarnslingan is a nature trail in the town centre and is about 1.5 kilometres long. Salamanders live in the area, some permanently and others only temporarily. This trail therefore brings together a compact route and a specific glimpse of local wildlife.

Nature trails in the centre and surrounding area

A longer loop in the centre is Hälsans Stig: the route is five kilometres long, follows a circular path and is marked with signs at every kilometre. Nösnäs friluftsområde also has a 1.5-kilometre illuminated trail. The area is also home to the Stenungsund Arena disc golf course.

The route lengths offer a clear comparison: Kvarnslingan is about 1.5 kilometres long, Hälsans Stig covers five kilometres, and the loop around Gårdsjön in the surrounding area is about six kilometres. Gårdsjön itself is a clear-water lake covering about 32 hectares. Stenungsön is also nearby, where a longer nature trail measures 3.3 kilometres. The nature trails in the south of the island pass through deep forests and offer coastal views. This gives you a choice between trails in the centre and longer nature routes in the surrounding area.

Medieval traces and historic buildings

Stenunge by preserves the remains of a medieval village in the centre of Stenungsund. MariagĂĄrden offers a different historic highlight: this listed building dates from the late 18th century. Beside the building is a reconstructed water-powered grain mill, which can grind flour when there is sufficient water. MariagĂĄrden is a twelve-minute walk from Stenungsund railway station.

Stenungsunds Hembygdsmuseum is housed in an 18th-century glassmaker’s farmstead. It displays interiors and objects from the local area. At the centrally located Kulturhuset Fregatten, you’ll find RUM1, a creative workshop where you can make films. The cultural centre can be reached by bus, bicycle or car; it is also within walking distance of Stenungsund railway station.

Art by the sea and walks

Stenungsunds Konststråk is an art walk by the sea. It runs from Nösnäsbadet in the south to Badhustorget in the north. At Stenungsunds konsthall, the art gallery serves as a platform for established and local artists, as well as new, emerging and challenging artists. Nearby, a walk on Stenungsön passes numerous grand villas from the early 20th century.

Routes and getting around town

The Cykla Stenungsund-Jordhammar cycling route starts in the centre at the tourist information office in Kulturhuset Fregatten. From there, it runs 6.6 kilometres each way to Söskär beach. Stenungsund’s guest harbour is close to shops, services and entertainment. These points of interest complement the trails and cultural sites by helping you find your way around town during your stay.

When planning your trip, it’s worth first deciding what you’d like to focus on: short trails in the centre, historic sites, art by the sea or nature trails in the surrounding area. This way, you can tailor your search for a hotel in Stenungsund to the experiences you want to shape your trip.
