Tidan’s history can be viewed on different scales: the founding of the Yllefabriken textile mills marked the beginning of the town in 1910, while the River Tidan historically served as an important source of energy for mills, power stations and the textile industry. Together, these facts show two different sides of the town’s history: a specific founding and the river’s broader economic significance. For visitors interested in cultural history, Tidan offers more than a single historical point of reference.

Local History and Traces of the Past

Vallby Sörgården, a well-preserved 19th-century farmstead, is located in Tidan. In and around the Vallby Sörgården cultural reserve, you can also find a runestone, remnants of roads and several Iron Age graves. These traces indicate that the area has been used since prehistoric times. A 19th-century farmstead thus stands alongside evidence of a much longer history of use.

Nearby is Askeberga ship setting, Sweden’s second-largest ship setting. Its 24 boulder-shaped stones are about two metres high and arranged in an oval measuring 55 metres long and 18 metres wide. These dimensions give a clear sense of the monument’s form: it is a structure made up of many stones, not a single standing stone. Also nearby is Vaholms Brohus, a covered bridge over the River Tidan. It is probably the only bridge of its kind in Sweden. Another type of destination is nearby Lake Östen, an internationally important Ramsar wetland. The stone setting, bridge and wetland thus represent different cultural-historical and landscape highlights in the area.

Cultural Attractions and Special Themes in Tidan

The Centralföreningen in Tidan houses a craft and gift shop, an art gallery and a museum. The museum also displays vintage light motorcycles. The different sections range from art and crafts to historic vehicles. At Vävareparken, the redesign of the historic manager’s garden, with additional plants, reflects Tidan’s industrial history. The two places offer different points of interest: one brings a museum, art and shops together under one roof; the other combines park design with the town’s industrial heritage.

Bennys Trädgårdsjärnväg in Tidan is a miniature garden railway and a visitor attraction. With a gauge or scale of 2:22.5, it is one of Sweden’s largest garden railways. The railway offers a distinctive perspective on railways in miniature. Olstorps Festplats offers a very different experience: in summer, it hosts live music by popular party bands and performers. The venue also has a separate buggbana dance floor for dancing in a folk-park setting; Club Veboá is an open-air disco on the grounds. Österbergs Konditori preserves a 1950s atmosphere and adds another dimension to the town’s cultural offerings.

Kulturväg Skaraborg as a Wider Framework

When planning your trip, it is useful to distinguish individual attractions from a tourist route. Kulturväg Skaraborg lets you explore historic places independently and enjoy nature; the road ends in Tidan. It is signposted with brown-and-white signs. The route thus offers a broader framework for culture and landscape, while each of the places mentioned has its own focus, such as industrial history, archaeological traces, art or a garden railway.
