If you are considering Svanesund as a travel destination, you will find several distinct highlights: a short car-ferry connection, hiking trails with a focus on nature and culture, a seaside beach and traces of local culture. The hiking trails in particular differ in length and theme. You can first decide whether a cultural-historical walk, a longer route, time at the beach or art should shape your stay.

Travel by car ferry

The Svanesundsleden car ferry connects Svanesund on Orust with Kolhättan on the Halsefjord in Bohuslän. The crossing takes five minutes; the car ferry is free of charge. The ferry connection is a clear reference point for planning your arrival. If you are timing your arrival around it, check the current timetable for your travel day.

Hiking: two different scales

Kultehamn is an approximately 4 km cultural-historical hiking trail in Svanesund on Orust. It passes through hilly woodland and moorland and by 14 croft ruins and information boards. The boards describe the history and construction of the croft houses, as well as how the families made a living through small-scale farming and coastal work. The explanations link the physical traces of the buildings to the economic foundations of family life. At Kultehamn, landscape and local history are therefore the main focus as distinct but connected themes.

Orust Tvärs, also known as Kuststigen Orust, is a 44 km nature and culture trail from coast to coast. The hiking trail runs between Svanesund and Ängön. By comparison, Kultehamn is considerably shorter, at approximately 4 km. This gives you a clear choice of routes: shorter and cultural-historical at Kultehamn, longer with a focus on both nature and culture on Orust Tvärs.

Cultural traces in the town

The only ship carving found on Orust is located in Svanesund; it was discovered in 1989. A ship carving is an image of a ship carved into rock. Sestervik Konstgalleri offers a different cultural connection: in a studio in Svanesund on Orust, it presents a permanent exhibition of glass and watercolour works. A historical archaeological trace and a permanent art exhibition thus offer two distinct cultural themes. If you would like to include art and local history alongside the hiking trails, you will find two different points of interest here.

Seaside swimming beach

Svanesund’s swimming beach is a family-friendly spot by the sea. It combines a sandy beach, grassy areas and rocks; there are also bathing jetties, a diving tower and toilets. The beach features and facilities give you practical details to consider for swimming by the sea. The beach offers a different focus from the hiking routes: here it is all about swimming, while Kultehamn and Orust Tvärs focus on trails and their respective themes. When planning your trip, you can choose between the beach, hiking and culture, or enjoy several of these interests.
