Mollösund is an old, authentic fishing village at the southwestern tip of Orust. This sheltered coastal village combines a harbor with a maritime character, fishing history, and archaeological traces. This gives you several ways to plan your stay: you can focus on seafaring and the harbor, explore historical remains, or make walks and a visit to the beach the main focus.

Harbor, beach, and seafaring

Mollösund lies sheltered behind Mollön. The guest harbor has around 100 berths. In the northwestern part of the village, the lighthouse on Gallebergsudden welcomes sailors and other seafarers. The harbor and the lighthouse are two maritime points of reference: one represents boating, the other seafaring along the coast.

Kattevik is another notable destination in the village. The child-friendly beach can be reached from the harbor by following the footpath west over the hill. This brings different coastal attractions together: the harbor and its berths, the lighthouse in the northwestern part of Mollösund, and a beach reached by the path from the harbor. If you would like to combine time by the water with a walk, you can take these destinations into account when making your own plans without having to follow a set itinerary.

Fishing, the harbor site, and the windmill

Mollösund’s fishing history can be explored at specific locations. Sjöbodsmuséet showcases longline fishing, offering a way to learn about the village’s maritime history. The archaeological harbor site offers a different perspective: it includes remains of older jetties. Its cultural layer dates from the 15th to the 18th century and contains abundant fish bones, wood or wood chips, and ballast flint.

The jetty remains and the materials in the cultural layer complement each other: one comprises named structural remains, the other finds from a long period. The harbor site can therefore be explored both as a place with surviving structures and through its archaeological traces. Sjöbodsmuséet, meanwhile, focuses specifically on longline fishing.

Another historical landmark is the Mollösund windmill. Its origins date back to the 18th century, and it remained in operation until 1929. Kvarnens Dag is held in Mollösund every year to celebrate the windmill. If you would like to time your visit to coincide with this festival, check the event date in advance.

Cultural walks and routes through the village

Mollösund has a digital cultural walk. Since the availability of digital offerings may change, it is a good idea to check whether the walk is currently available before your visit. The information board by the parking area provides another guide: it has several suggested walks through Mollösund and the surrounding area. The suggested routes therefore cover more than just the village itself; they also explore the wider area.

For planning purposes, these offer two different options: a digital walk with a cultural focus and several walking suggestions on the information board. Together with the harbor, windmill, archaeological site, and beach, they offer a range of interests to explore during your stay. It is up to you which ones to choose; no specific program or set order is prescribed.

Plan your accommodation and stay

If you are looking for accommodation, it helps to first decide what you would like to focus on during your stay: are you mainly interested in fishing history and harbor archaeology, walks, the windmill, or Kattevik? The guest harbor’s approximate 100 berths may also be useful to visitors interested in the boating harbor.

Mollösund can be explored from several perspectives: as an old fishing village, as a place with archaeological traces and historical landmarks, and as a starting point for the walking options mentioned here and the route to the beach. When planning, choose the themes that suit your stay, and if you are visiting for Kvarnens Dag, take the event date into account.
