Kungsviken combines a long history of boatbuilding with Kungsviken’s swimming spot, Kungsvikens badplats. This offers two distinct areas to focus on when planning your visit: tracing the development of boatbuilding across different periods, or considering the swimming spot with its diving tower and seasonal swimming school. The area’s history includes a preserved shipyard setting and specific boats. Whether you are more interested in local history, swimming, or both can help shape your stay.

Shipyard History on Orust and in Kungsviken

Kungsviken is designated in Orust Municipality’s cultural heritage conservation programme as a coastal settlement of great cultural and historical value. In the mid-19th century, shipyards on Orust flourished; in the northwest of Orust, Kungsviken, Brattås and Svineviken were known for their boatbuilding. In the early 20th century, there were more than fifteen different boatyards along the shores of Kungsviken bay. The time and place references differ: the period of flourishing relates to shipyards on Orust in the mid-19th century, while the figure of more than fifteen refers to the shores of the bay in the early 20th century. These details therefore mark two different periods and geographical areas in the boatbuilding tradition.

Gösta Johansson’s Shipyard and the Boats Built There

In 1947, Gösta Johansson founded his shipyard under the name “Kungsvikens Jakt- och Motorbåtsvarv”. The entire unique shipyard setting has been preserved and includes buildings, a sawmill, a slipway and a pier. The shipyard is a historical link; its surroundings show that the history is tied not just to a name or a single boat, but also to the preserved features of the shipyard site.

One specific early boat is Polstjernan: Julius i Kilen, Gösta Johansson’s father, built it in Kungsviken in 1919. Later, from 1982 to 1984, Gösta Johansson built the carvel-built motor sailer Josefin there on Orust. The two construction periods are far apart and connect the area’s history with two generations of the family. Kungsviken is an important place where boatbuilding knowledge has endured and continued to develop to the present day.

Members can book the boats Josefin and Myra. If you would like to include such a booking in your travel plans, check membership requirements and availability in advance. The booking option is for members.

Swimming Spot and Seasonal Planning

Kungsvikens badplats is child-friendly and has a diving tower. A swimming school is also offered at the swimming spot; it is seasonal. Before your trip, check whether the swimming school is running during your visit. Facilities may also vary seasonally, so it is a good idea to confirm in advance that the facilities you need will be available during your visit.

The area’s history and the swimming spot raise different planning considerations: the shipyard history focuses on how things developed over time and the preserved surroundings, while seasonal offerings matter for swimming. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Kungsviken, you can use these interests as a starting point for planning your stay.
