On Öckerö, trails through the coastal landscape meet bird habitats and a long cultural history. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the different scales: a 4,600-metre gravel path, a 7.8-kilometre stage and a 35.3-kilometre coastal hiking trail describe different ways to explore the islands.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

The Hönöleden connects Lilla Varholmen with Hönö/Öckerö via a 2.5-kilometre car ferry route. The crossing takes 13 minutes and is free of charge. Check the timetable and any service disruption notices before travelling. For information about attractions, restaurants, accommodation and events, the Municipality of Öckerö directs visitors to an official tourism portal. InfoPoints on the islands also have brochures and practical tips for your visit.

Coast, Wetlands and Birdlife

The outer archipelago landscape of the Municipality of Öckerö is rugged and exposed. It includes beaches, cliffs, hills, meadows, heathland, natural areas and cultural landscapes. Two nature reserves have been established to protect areas of particular natural value. Rördammen is one of the municipality’s largest wetlands and is known for its diverse birdlife.

The coast has a different character: near Kärrsvik and Hummerviken, extensive boulder fields continue into the sea across a flat, barren landscape. Hjälvik has a bathing beach and a beach volleyball court. For those interested in different types of coastline, the boulder fields and beach landscape offer distinct subjects to explore alongside the wetland.

Hiking Routes of Different Lengths

The Göteborgs skärgårdsled is 35.3 kilometres long in total and includes three stages and two circular loops. Its third stage runs across Öckerö and measures 7.8 kilometres. On Öckerö, the trail passes Rördammen, Hummerviken and Hjälviks badplats. This puts the island section in the context of a longer hiking route, without confusing it with the route’s total length.

Another distance applies to the Öckerö nature area and exercise trail: there is a 4,600-metre gravel path with branches towards Hummerviken, Rördammen and Rävholmen. The figures help compare the distances: 4,600 metres refers to this gravel path, 7.8 kilometres to the third stage of the Göteborgs skärgårdsled, and 35.3 kilometres to the entire coastal hiking trail. When planning your days, you can choose the route that best suits your hiking plans.

Church, Archaeology and Island History

Öckerö gamla kyrka is a stone church dating from the mid-15th century, built to replace an older stave church. Its ceiling paintings date from the late 18th century and were created by Jean Liljedahl. The church therefore brings together two distinct historical periods: the construction of the medieval church and the paintings added later.

Around 200 known archaeological monuments have been preserved on the Öckerö Islands. The municipality has Stone Age settlements and Bronze Age burial mounds; there are also sea marks from different periods on the highest points. The maritime past is part of the picture too: wrecks of sunken ships and objects from bygone times lie on the seabed around the islands.

The Öckerö local history farm comprises four red-painted houses, two of which are over 200 years old. There are also several historic outbuildings. The collection includes tools and objects related to farming, carpentry, fishing, schooling and former local shops. Bagebrö “Hönökaka” is often baked in the bakehouse, which private individuals can book. Confirm availability before visiting.

Events and Cultural Dates

Konstvågen takes place every year on the first weekend of August in the Municipality of Öckerö. During the event, visitors can visit artists in their studios, homes, boat sheds and gardens. If you want to plan your trip around this event, check the current dates before making arrangements.
