Kalvsund combines a car-free island setting with a local maritime history that dates back at least to the Middle Ages. When planning your trip, consider the passenger ferry, historical traces and local options for walking, exercise or swimming. The island offers several ways to shape your stay. Choose according to the subjects that interest you, and factor in the ferry crossing from the start.

Getting there and the car-free island setting

Kalvsund is separated from Björkö by a narrow sound. Västtrafik ferry route 296 connects Öckerö, Framnäs on Björkö, Kalvsund and Grötö. If travelling by passenger ferry, you can park at the ferry terminal on Björkö or Öckerö and take the ferry from there. Check the current timetable before departure. Your parking location and crossing go together: coordinate your departure with the terminal where you plan to park.

Kalvsund’s maritime history

The Valen sea marker stands at the highest point on Kalvsund. The compass rose carved into the rock below Valen in 1684 is protected as a fixed archaeological feature. Kalvsund’s role as a harbour dates back at least to the Middle Ages. In the past, the village was a centre for the herring trade as well as a customs and pilot station.

A clash took place near Kalvsund in 1309 between Duke Erik Magnusson and King Håkon V of Norway. These dates show the breadth of the area’s history: a harbour function dating back at least to the Middle Ages, the clash of 1309, a compass rose from 1684 and Bremerska villan from 1912. This distinguishes an individual archaeological feature, the harbour village’s former functions and the history of a building.

Bremerska villan and exhibition

Bremerska villan was built in 1912 for herring merchant Börjesson and was listed as a building of historical interest on 2 August 2004. Among other things, it housed a bank and a guesthouse. Its building and usage history adds a specific building with several former functions to the maritime story. The ground floor houses an exhibition about the smuggler king Bremer. It is open during the summer season and on certain occasions by arrangement. Check current access arrangements before visiting.

Walking, fitness and swimming spots

Kalvsund has a 1.2-kilometre walking route. There is also a newly built outdoor fitness course next to the Såsen association premises at Gamla vägen 19. The route gives you a specific distance to factor into your day’s plans, while the fitness course offers a different kind of exercise. Körrgårns badplats bathing spot has a swimming jetty, a diving tower and a dry toilet. Check whether the facilities are currently available before your visit. Bindes is a smaller bathing spot in the southwest of Kalvsund. Find out about seasonal facilities before travelling. This lets you distinguish between the bathing spots based on their amenities and size descriptions.
