A stay in Munkedal can focus on nature or industrial history. The Brudslöjan waterfall is in the Kviström Nature Reserve, while Gamla Bruket preserves traces of the area’s former working life. Other highlights include the Bohusleden trail, a historic narrow-gauge railway with train rides today, and seasonal activities on the water. When planning, you can first decide whether to focus on the landscape, local history, a train ride, or a limited-time offering.

Nature around Munkedal

The Kviström Nature Reserve is located immediately beside Munkedal, on the eastern side of the Örekilsälven valley. Within the reserve, Klevabäcken tumbles down a rocky slope to form the Brudslöjan waterfall. Its flow varies with the seasons. If the waterfall is a deciding factor in your travel plans, it is worth considering this variation when choosing when to visit.

The Örekilsälven Nature Reserve offers a different connection with nature: the Bohusleden trail runs through its northern half. The two nature areas therefore have distinct features: Kviström is known for its named waterfall, while the Örekilsälven Nature Reserve is defined by the trail that runs through its northern half. If you plan to hike the Bohusleden, check current trail conditions in advance.

Historic sites and industrial heritage

The district of Tunge’s execution site was located on Galgberget in Munkedal. It was used from at least the 16th century until the 1820s. This historic site offers a different historical perspective from the building and operational history of Gamla Bruket and the Munkedals Jernväg.

Gamla Bruket preserves a former sawmill worker’s house built in 1805. The former nail forge building at Gamla Bruket was also built in the 1820s. The Munkedals paper mill began operating in 1871. Here, the area’s industrial history can be explored through different points of reference: a preserved home, a former forge building, and the start of the paper mill’s operations.

The Munkedals Jernväg was built in 1895 as a 5.6-kilometre narrow-gauge railway between the harbour on Saltkällefjorden and the mill. Today, the Munkedals Jernväg offers train rides on a narrow-gauge railway from Munkedals nedre via Åtorp to the harbour at Munkedal. The railway’s construction history and its current train service are distinct aspects. As operating days may vary, it is a good idea to check the available travel dates before your trip.

Seasonal activities on the water

Just outside Munkedal, Friluftsfrämjandet’s canoe centre is located at Kaserna, on Lake Vassbotten. It rents out canoes and kayaks from May to September. If you plan to take part, check the rental dates for your travel period in advance.

Salmon fishing is also seasonal: salmon fishing takes place in the Örekilsälven within Munkedal Municipality from April to September. The two periods overlap from May to September, while the fishing season starts in April. Check current dates and applicable rules before making plans. This will help you choose your travel dates based on whether canoe rental, fishing, or a combination of seasonal activities is your priority.
