In Lyrestad, canal history, sacred art and routes along the Göta Canal come together. Highlights range from the canal warehouse and a Madonna figure in the church to the car-free towpath. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between cultural history, cycling and hiking; in winter, there is also a ski slope with a lift, whose operation may vary.

Cultural history between church and canal

The canal warehouse was built in 1823–1824. Lyrestads hembygdsförening later renovated the building and opened a museum there. Lyrestad Church is located directly south of the Göta Canal. It was rebuilt in 1674 on the site of, and partly on the foundations of, a medieval stone church.

The church also houses a Madonna figure that is believed to date from the 12th century and is among the oldest in the Diocese of Skara. Alongside the 1674 rebuilding, it offers a separate historical point of interest as a work of art believed to be considerably older. The townscape also reflects the history of communications: a former repeater station building, which was part of the telegraph and telephone line between Stockholm and Gothenburg, has been preserved in Lyrestad. The historical themes therefore extend beyond the architectural history of the church and canal.

Guest harbour and routes along the Göta Canal

The quays of a former loading site on the Göta Canal now serve as a guest harbour for tourist canal boats. The guest harbour has 15 berths and 12 power outlets rated at 6 A; there are also toilets, showers and a laundry room. The quays’ former use and their current role for tourist canal boats connect a historical reference with today’s canal landscape.

A car-free towpath runs along the Göta Canal near Lyrestad and is suitable for hiking and cycling. Cyclists can choose between two destinations: Sjötorp is about 7 km from Lyrestad, while Töreboda is about 10 km away. Sjötorp is therefore the shorter of the two cycle routes; both routes pass locks. Route distances may change, so it is a good idea to check the latest route details before setting off. The distances given refer to these cycle routes, not to a walking time for the towpath. The two distances mentioned differ by around 3 km.

More activities and seasonal planning

There is a ski slope with a lift near the school in Lyrestad. Its winter operation may vary; if you plan to visit the slope, check in advance whether it will be operating during your intended period. This makes it different from the cultural attractions and the towpath: it depends on the particular winter season.

Hamnmagasinet has a café serving homemade sweet yeast pastries and cakes. As dining information may change, check the current opening hours before planning a visit specifically for the café.
