The former Västgötabanan railway and Lake Mjörn define two different sides of Björboholm: railway remains tell the story of the town’s development, while the park, promenade and cycling routes offer other ways to spend time outdoors. You can tailor your stay to your interests in history, water or cycling.

Västgötabanan and local history

The opening of the Västgötabanan railway in 1900 helped Björboholm develop into a central locality. Several traces of the former railway remain in the town: the station house, the railway worker’s cottage and the railway embankment with its rock cuttings. These relics are important for understanding and appreciating Björboholm. With its summer villas along the Västgötabanan, Björboholm is one of the municipal conservation areas around Lake Mjörn.

Björboholmsparken is in the centre of town, along the former railway embankment. The garden pavilion has a book exchange shelf open to everyone. You can leave, borrow, exchange, take or read books there. The shelf was restocked in autumn 2023; check in advance whether it will be available during your visit if you are planning around it. The park thus brings together a central location and one of the surviving traces of the former railway.

Park, peninsula and promenade

The older part of Björboholm lies partly on a beautiful peninsula. The former common woodland is now highly valued for recreation and outdoor activities. Behind Björboholmsparken, a football pitch overlooks Lake Mjörn. If you are planning to use the pitch, check the current conditions beforehand, as access and conditions may change.

The path around Björbo Huvde is called Strandkullepromenaden; Björbo Huvde is also known as Strandkullen. The promenade was restored from 2011 to 2013, and its steamboat pier was rebuilt. The historical features differ: railway buildings and landscape traces remain, while the promenade is notable for its restoration and the rebuilding of the pier.

On Lake Mjörn: Boating, nature and cycling route

From the marina in Björboholm, you can take your own boat on a trip around the islands of Lake Mjörn. Mjörns båtuthyrning in Björboholm offers boat rentals; operating details may change, so check the current conditions before making plans. Lake Mjörn is considered one of the region’s richest lakes for fishing, both in terms of the diversity of species and the quantity of fish.

The Mjörn Runt loop is 67 kilometres long, with around 700 metres of elevation gain. It offers views of Lake Mjörn and then follows the waterfront for a longer stretch. The cycle route follows a former railway embankment towards Björboholm and Sjövik. The distance and elevation gain help you gauge the scale of the ride; check route conditions before setting off. The area immediately south of Björboholm is near Sverigeleden, a national cycle route. The options therefore differ by mode of travel: a boat trip around the islands in your own boat, or a measured cycling loop with sections alongside the water.
