Tostared lies on the heights above Lake Lygnern, on the northwestern side of the slope that descends towards the lake. The water and elevated setting give the area a strong connection to its landscape; church history, organ building and the natural surroundings of Sjögärde also shape the range of topics to explore.
Lake, forest and water
The Sjögärde nature reserve lies near Tostared, on the border with Halland. Small streams run through its beech forest. The path through Sjögärde also leads to the shore of Lygnern, where there is a small sandy beach. There are also plenty of opportunities for paddling around Tostared and Lake Lygnern. The forest, shoreline and water activities offer different ways to explore nature.
The Bokskogen bathing area is on Tostaredvägen, in the direction of the sea. Check the current facilities before your visit. Långehult damm is said to have approximately one barbecue area on private land; check access locally before including the site in your plans. For orientation, distinguish between two bodies of water: the path through Sjögärde leads to the shore of Lygnern, while Bokskogen is on Tostaredvägen in the direction of the sea. Tostared itself lies on the heights above the lake.
Church and craftsmanship
The history of Tostareds kyrka includes several distinct dates. The church’s oak timber was felled in 1540, and the present tower was built in 1824. The soapstone baptismal font dates from 1250 and belongs to the group known as the “Starrkärr fonts”. These three dates refer to different elements: the baptismal font as a fixture, the oak as a building material and the present tower as part of the building. Chronologically, the baptismal font is the oldest of the three elements mentioned in the church: its date of 1250 predates the felling of the oak in 1540 and the construction of the present tower in 1824.
The organ factory in Tostared offers another perspective on local craftsmanship. Since the 1930s, it has built and renovated more than 200 organs in various locations across Sweden. Its work reaches beyond the area and offers a different perspective on Tostared’s history than the church’s structural elements.
Arts, crafts and a café at Eskekärr Säteri
Eskekärr Galleri & Hantverksbutik is located at Eskekärr Säteri in Tostared, near Lake Lygnern. Café Magasinet is also part of the estate; it was formerly used as a grain store.
