Between the Nossan River and cultural sites in town, Herrljunga reveals itself along several routes. The Nossan promenade is about 1.8 kilometres long and runs between Haraberget and Orraholmen. Its named endpoints give the route a clear direction; other paths each have their own focus.

Trails to Suit Different Needs and Tastes

The Blue Trail begins at the Orraholmen recreation area and is about 2.4 kilometres long. The Yellow Trail is a loop of about four kilometres that connects to Skoghälla. You can distinguish the two loops by their length, while the Nossan promenade connects the endpoints at Haraberget and Orraholmen.

The municipality has almost 130 kilometres of hiking trails and exercise paths in total. The routes range from the shortest, at 1.3 kilometres, to the longest, at 21 kilometres. There is also a pilgrimage trail measuring 47.5 kilometres in total. These figures show the range of routes available, from shorter walks to longer trails.

Cultural Heritage in Town and Across the Municipality

The Herrljunga Town Promenade combines exercise with culture: the circular route is about 3.5 kilometres long and includes 38 cultural sites or information points. Herrljunga’s Kulturhus houses an art gallery and an auditorium; the Fåglavik Glassworks Museum is also located there. There is also a tourist information office in the Kulturhus.

The local heritage park has about 20 buildings and is one of the larger open-air museums in the district. Other historic sites offer different points of interest: Gäsene Courthouse features a well-preserved courtroom dating from 1776. Jällby Church is one of the few surviving wooden churches in Västergötland. The old church of Herrljunga was probably built in the 13th century; its historic site is by the Nossan, north of Haraberget.

The archaeological heritage is also varied. Odins flisor consists of three upright stones standing on the same elevation. The Iron Age burial ground at Nycklabacken contains nearly 200 archaeological remains; the Skogsbo stone cist is 4,000 years old. Elisabeth Hesselblad was born in Fåglavik on 4 June 1870. A railway station complex has also been preserved there, including the station building, outbuildings, an earth cellar and a garden. It is the only surviving example of an early type of railway station designed by SJ’s architectural office.

The Nossan, Haraberget and Woodland Landscapes

Haraberget is a small hill in the Herrljunga urban area, near the Nossan River. At Haraberget’s southern entrance, a paved, accessible path leads down from Grindarna to a pond. Coffee tables are set up there in summer. At Orraholmen by the lake, there is a rest area with benches, a wind shelter and a barbecue area. At Molla beech forest, visitor facilities include marked trails, boardwalks and a rest area; the history of the oldest part of the beech forest dates back to the 17th century.

You can travel along the Nossan by canoe or kayak, but the river is challenging because of its many portage points. The river is also a notable natural feature of the region, with 30 documented fish species. If you prefer two wheels, Herrljungabygden has cycling routes of about 11 to 70 kilometres. They run along paved roads and gravel tracks.

Market Days, Events and Local Produce

Knallemarknad Herrljunga takes place on the second Tuesday of every month and is a long-standing tradition. Kullingstrofén, a rally cup event, is also held annually. The international trampoline competition Frivolten Cup takes place in Herrljunga in May. Konst och hantverksrundan is usually scheduled for 1 September; it includes, among other things, a group exhibition at the Herrljunga Art Gallery in the Kulturhus. If you’re planning a trip around an event, check the exact dates in advance.

For a taste of local produce, Rekoring Herrljunga offers goods directly from producers once a month. Collection usually takes place on the last Wednesday of the month at Röda torget in Herrljunga. The farm shop at Herrljunga Drycker sells the manufacturer’s full range of non-alcoholic drinks; it also stocks, among other things, rusks, crispbread, fudge, chocolate and snacks from other local businesses. In the municipality, the Gäsene Mejeri shop also offers the opportunity to taste cheese, learn more about the dairy’s cheeses and buy milk.
