A clear-water lake surrounded by coniferous and deciduous forests, and a cultural landscape bearing traces of farming, milling and tanning, give Hällingsjö a strong connection to nature and history. If you are considering Hällingsjö as a place to stay, two aspects can help you choose: the water and forest on the one hand, and evidence of earlier land use on the other.

Gingsjön and the Forest Landscape

Gingsjön is a clear-water lake surrounded by coniferous and deciduous forests. At the Gingsjöns badplats bathing area in Hällingsjö, there are jetties, a diving tower and a toilet. Check the facilities again before your visit. Gingsjön is designated as an EU bathing water. Dogs and horses are prohibited at Gingsjön in Hällingsjö during the bathing season, from 1 May through 15 September.

Another connection to water is Gisslebäcken. It runs through a deeply incised valley with nutrient-rich, moist deciduous forest. The landscape features differ specifically: the lake is defined by its clear water and surrounding forest types, while the stream is defined by the valley and its moist deciduous forest.

Cultural Landscape on the North Shore

The Björnhult area is located in Hällingsjö on the north shore of Gingsjön. It illustrates the late cultivation of the forest region and is considered the best-preserved area in Härryda Municipality. Many large clearance cairns shape the area. Björnhult thus combines its lakeside location with a distinct cultural-history theme: the late cultivation of the forest region.

Mill, Tannery and Inn

The water-powered mill on the Hällingsjö 1:10 property was in operation until 1974. After 1931, it had two roller mills and two pairs of millstones. Roller mills and pairs of millstones represent two different forms of historical milling technology.

On the eastern shore of Hällingsjö, the foundations of a large wooden building with a drying loft have been preserved. It was built as a tannery in 1850. While the mill is notable for its equipment and period of operation, here the focus is on the surviving foundations and the building’s former purpose. Both sites point to different forms of local industrial history.

The area around the inn in Hällingsjö preserves the old country road, with a milestone, and a park-like garden. The inn was moved to Hällingsjö because the location at a crossroads was more convenient. Hällingsberg, also known as Säteriet, is a small manor house in Hällingsjö dating from the 19th century. Its main building faces the fields to the south. The Hällingsberg estate is surrounded by a park, and the approach runs through an avenue of trees.
