Ryttarens Peat Litter Factory and its peat railway offer a tangible glimpse into the history of peat extraction. Kättilstorp, in turn, grew around a railway station that opened to traffic in 1878. Industrial use and the development of the village therefore stand alongside each other as two distinct historical themes.
Peat History and Technology
Ryttarens Peat Litter Factory and two kilometres of its peat railway were designated a listed building by the County Administrative Board in 2012. Earlier peat extraction has created a cultural landscape of great interest for visitors at Ryttaren peat bog. Visitors can ride the peat railway to the former extraction areas on the bog; the journey connects the history of the line with the landscape shaped by peat extraction.
The factory retained its turn-of-the-century character throughout the 20th century. Two of its original three presses have survived to this day. Guided tours at Ryttarens Peat Litter Factory can be booked for groups, school classes and coach parties. The preserved machinery and the history of peat extraction give the visit a clear focus, while a ride on the peat railway and a guided tour need not be the same experience.
Church and Local History
Yllestad Church is in Kättilstorp, south of Falköping. It was built between 1843 and 1848 in what is known as the Neoclassical style. The church’s construction and the station’s opening in 1878 mark two distinct milestones in the village’s history: the construction of the church in the 1840s and the later opening of the station to traffic.
If you are interested in architecture, the church offers a different way to explore history than the peat factory and its preserved presses. Together, these details paint a picture of building history, transport development and industrial use; each theme can be explored on its own rather than being combined into a single story.
