Färgelanda is centrally located as a starting point between the western sea and Lake Vänern. The town brings together an annual art exhibition programme and its history as a railway settlement, as well as a range of route options. Specific features can help you decide what interests you: a former railway line along the Valboån, views across Dalsland, or the length and facilities of the Flottarleden.

Art and railway heritage

Färgelanda konsthall is located in Färgelanda Centrumhus at Timmervägen 12 and shows contemporary art. It presents eight to ten exhibitions each year, usually running for four weeks. If you are planning a visit, check the visitor arrangements in advance.

After the Lelångenbanan was built in the late 1890s, Färgelanda developed into a railway settlement. This history gives the former railway line a particular connection to the area: a combined walking and cycling path between Färgelanda and Ödeborg follows the old route.

Trails and landscape

The walking and cycling path between Färgelanda and Ödeborg runs along the Valboån and follows the former route of the Lelångebanan. It is defined both by its connection between the two towns and by the river. Walking paths in and around Färgelanda offer views of the Dalsland landscape. The different options have different points of focus: the combined path is described in terms of its route and the river, while the walking paths are described in terms of their landscapes.

The scenic Flottarleden connects Färgelanda with Bohuslän and Kaserna and is about 30 kilometres long. There are camping areas and barbecue facilities along the route. This means that when planning, you can consider both the approximate distance and specific features along the trail. Compared with the walking and cycling path to Ödeborg, the Flottarleden is characterised by its length, camping areas and barbecue facilities; the other path by the railway line, connection between the towns and the Valboån.

Orientation and culture

The Färgelanda InfoPoint has a map of Kroppefjäll and Ödeborgsfjället. It provides information about history, vegetation and hiking trails. This lets you explore different interests: the landscape, its history or the trails. There are several hiking trails in the Kroppefjäll Nature Reserve.

Karl XII:s väg also has a specific, named starting point: it begins at Soldattorpet Bräckan in Järbo. Högsäters kyrka is a Neo-Gothic brick church dating from 1902, preserved in its original design both inside and out. These details offer different points of interest for culture enthusiasts: a named starting point for a trail and a church with a clearly defined period of construction and architectural style.

Ättehögskullen lies just south of Färgelanda. Its location provides a specific geographical reference to the town. Together with Färgelanda’s position between the western sea and Lake Vänern, this makes it possible to place the town in context through individual sites and landscape themes, without requiring you to choose a particular route when planning.
